Old Landing Gear Blamed for Accident Fatal to Longshoreman. OAKLAND, Calif., NoY. 21. (AP)--Tliu death of an Oakland longshoreman aboard the German motorship Weser was set down as an accldont by police who blamed it today on the use of old loading gear. The victim, Nick Pesha, father of threo children, was killed when a cable broke and a 12-ton boom crashed on the ship's deck. Forty-five minutes later, another Cable smipped and a second giant wooden boom fell to the deck, nar rowly missing three longshoremen. The GO longshoremen working the cargo thou left tho ship, saying they would not roiurn to their jobs until they were convinced tholr safety was assured. Polico Lieut. L. M. Carroll, after questioning ship's officers and longshoroiucn, said he was con vinced both cable breaks were ac cidental, ,-. Vancouver Docked Among the first visitors to tho ship after the boom fell on Pesha was a group of investigators who had been examining a hole in the hull of the Oermau freighter Van couver. The Vancouver, crippled by an unexplained blast last No vember 3, was dryuockod yester day near the pier where the Wo.se r was uuloading. Capt. Frans Volgt, master of the Weser, attributed the falling booms to accidental causes.
