Several hundred thousand Utah rainbow trout soon are to be re leased from the state ganuj com mission fish hatchery at Hock creek, Attorney Dexter Itice, chair man of tho stato game commission, reported today. Ordinarily, he re ports, the fish would be held at the hatchery for a longer period and would not be released until late full, but due to the timiied anion u t of holding space it will be necessary to distribute them in the very near future. The fish are growing so rapidly that they al ready are overcrowding all avail able holding ponds- A largo pond is under construc tion at the hatchery but will not be available for use soon enough to permit holding the fry, Mr. Itice states. Yorklllen at the hatchery have completed marking IU.iiimi of the flsli. which are to be released ii Fish lake, in the South I'mpqua district. The coin mission is ex perimenting with the planting of these fish and will station a man at the lake, next year to check all catches. He will gather data on the growth of the fish, types of feed round in them, and other in formation needed by the commis sion in planning- future distribu tion. The fish are marked by clip ping their fins. They should be from seven to nine inches in long Hi by Ihe opening of the sea son next year, Mr. liice states. These fish, first released In the I'mpqua river four years ago, are a close kin to the steelhead. The species, however, has been land locked for many years and is be lieved to h a ve lout Its sea-go i u g instinct. PHEASANT RELEASE SETS STATE RECORD Total Hatch Nearly 100,000 Birds; Job Gives Money to 4-H Members. A record number of Chinese pheasants will be released in Ore gon this year. Attorney. Dexter itice, chairman of the stale game commission, reported today. While the hatching season has not. yet ended, nearly loo.ouu birds ulreudy have been hutched ut the game farms ant) by clubs and individuals throughout the state. More than 1.U00 birds, hatched and raised by Douglas county 4-H club members, were released last , week by Charles Lock wood, field representative of the commission, and K. A. Britton, county club lead- The game commission mtd tho club members 7f cents for each bird, making a total of more than $750 paid Douglas county boys and girls for their work. 'heusunt hens at the game farms in Corvallis, Kugene, Pendleton and Ontario districts laid 15I.2IU eggs according to the report cov ering tho period up to July III, Mr. Itice reports. Of these eggs 1111,917 had been set. At the game farms, 78,7X7 birds were hatched, of which 5.1S3 were hatched and raised by l-II club members throughout the slate and 17.D2U by other individ uals, sportsmen's clubs, etc. The game farms had 17,020 eggs in in cubators tho first of the month. These figures, Mr. itice reports, are far above any previous year, and releases should do much to re stock portions of the state where the birds have been largely de stroyed by hunters, predators and unfavorable weather conditions. Even at game farms the preda tor problem is an important one, the report shows, as the statement is made that 5 Hi predators, Includ ing hawks, owls, cats, chunks, wea sels and ruts, have been killed.
