Once the nume of the territory which later be&aine the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and. Montana, it has presented an in toi'eHting hut baffling problem. -There are three popular ex planations, which Smithsonian etymologists assert are "most certainly wrong." One uf these Is that the word Oregon was derived from Spanish "orejon," augmentative of "re- ja," or "ear." 'Since some of the Orecon In dians wore ear pendanta or nose sticks or jerked the ears of their children, it is . conceivable this Spanish word originated the name 'Oregon' but very unlikely, since the 'J,' pronounced almost like 'h, would not become "(J' In Ehk- llsll," explained Dr. John P. Har rington of the Hniithsonlan staff. 'To derive 'Oregon' from 'orejan' violates the laws of phonetics." Another etymology of the name "Oregon," which BcientlstB said was "absurd,'' was that it was de rived from the Spanish '"horean," or hurricane. This, they pointed out, was illogical since tornadoes were most infrequent in the Ore gon territory. The third popular explanation was that "Oregon" was derived from "O'Regan," the supposed name of an early trader. "However, a cursory search of records of the trading companies fails to reveal such a name," Dr. Harrington said. "If there was such a trader, he must have been too obscure a characted to have had a great country named 'O'Re gau's land.'" Actually, Dr. Harrington be lieves, the name "Oregon" was of Indian origin. He points out Its phonetics were "good Indian" and minute study of Indian langu age might someday solve the mys tery. The name first came to the at tention of the American reading public in the writings of Carver, wheu In 1778 he referred to what is now known as the Columbia riv er in the i'Oregon."
