The program was a -minstrel show with singing, jig ging and joking. The program was presented In appreciation of the presentation ol me uuue senior play at Steamboat in May. The Sew and So club met Thursday at the home of Mrs. Minnie Barker. The after noon was pleusantly spent with sewing and visiting. At the close of tile meeting tile hostess served delicious refreshments. NYE HONORED ON BIRTHDAY CLENDALE, Juno 29. Mrs. Melvin F. Nyo was pleasantly sur prised by a few friends who called Friday afternoon in honor of her birthday. Brooks, of this city, celo hraled his birthday anniversary, vesterduy, June 28. He was born in Wolfe county, Kentucky, June 28. 1858. and came to Oregon in 1893. "There are troublesome days ahead," Long said in a prepared speech to the national association of tax administrators. "The field of state tax administration needs more and greater abilities than ever before." Future problems, he said, would be those of constantly decreasing real estate values, greater outlays of public funds for social welfare, nnd increased invasion of the state tax field by the federal govern ment. "Since It appears that the fed eral government wlil concentrate Its taxation in the higher brackets, collecting a larger share of the larger Incomes and larger estates, it will be up to the states and their subdivisions to depend on sales and income tnxes reaching deeper into the lower brackets," Long said. The recent supreme court de cision holding the New York port authority liable for federal taxes, "opens the door to the federal gov ernment to tax everv stute fifrency," he contended, adding that 45 per cent of all stato activities, including state securities, might fall under federal tax laws. The Roseburg national guard unit,- Company D, 162nd infantry, returned this morning from a two weeks intensive- training camp at Camp Clatsop. The period pass ed with no accidents or serious In Jury, officers reported. The Roseburg company receiv ed high praise, not only for effi ciency. in the field and for the con dition of equipment, hut more par ticularly for the excellent conduct of the men. The company passed inspections with high marks, and was third in the machine gun competition which completely dismounted its equipment. Monday, July 4, due to the holi day, hut that regular weekly drills will be resumed July 11. RAN FRANCISCO, June 29. (AP) Because Al Capone refused to put up $10,000 to finance a plan to kidnap Harold L. Ickes, secre tary of the Interior In 1934, he's "the most hated man in Alcatraz," Roy Gardner, erstwhile mail rob ber, said today. Gardner, who spent two of his 17 years of prison servitude in Al catraz penitentiary, was recently released from Leavenworth federal prison. He said Albert Bates and Tom Underwood, two of '"The Rocks" toughtest prisoners, hatch ed the plot to kidnap Ickes and have him held hostage until Presi dent Roosevelt ordered a number or America's most widely known criminals released from Alcatraz. The former mail robber said the plot fell through ' because Capone refused to put up $10,01)0 needed to nuance It. "That made Capone the most hated man in prison," said Gard ner, "and the former Chicago vice lord hates everybody there." Hstuhrook and his family testi fied that his automobile, alleged to have been used in the bombing, was in The Dalles at the time and Kstahrook said he never rwas with others who have admitted partici pation in the violence INTEREST GROWS IN SWIM SCHOOL Growing interest In the Red Cross swimming schools promises to break previous records thin year, with 204 persons already reg istered and more joining the classes daily. The annual swim campaign has shown increased In terest each year, last years reg istration of 239 having been the largest since the activity was un dertaken. It is believed the num ber may reach 250 this year.
