Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Cooper, who have resided at Ashland for. the past year arrived at Melrose Thursday to visit the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. Mrs. Gab- bard Is a sister of Mrs. Dunn and she and Mrs. Ireland are both for mer Melrose residents. The Woodruff clan will picniq Sunday, August 22, in the grove at John Krohns which was the do nation land claim of Heart Wood ruff in 1852. Mrs. E. R. Fonn recently turned home from a ten days' va cation trip spent at the Home Makers' camp at Croft lake, under the supervision of Miss Josslo Palmlter. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stivers of San Francisco, Mrs. Nettie Hunan of Voncnila and Mrs. Jessie Don nauRh of Portland were guests of Melrose friends the latter part of last week. Mrs. John Husenbark, Jr., her son, Edward, and hor mother, Mrs. Kale Roece returned home Fri day from several days' vacationing at the coast. Mr. and Mrs. Dell Burnfiold of Los Angeles left Saturday for Mnrshfidd, after visiting the past and spend the day visiting and sight seeing. Mrs. George Norman, accom panied by her father, Hiram Smith, vada, made a business trip to Mel-1 were Roseburg visitors Tuesday rose Saturday in the Interest of a tract of timber Una which he owns. He is planning to make a road from tho Woodruff sawmill up ov er the mountain to this timber tract which consists largely of ce dar. Mr. Driver is planning to put in a shingle mill and truck the shingles to Yerington. He already has 'our men employed in building a eaoin on tho tract and clearing a place for the mill. Mr. Driver left Sunday for his home, Lut will re turn again Aug. 17 to start grad ing the road. Kd Glass and son liud. huwant Husenbark and Chas. Brown left Friday for Klamath Falls to seek employment. Mr. und Mrs. W. G. cooper visit ed Sunday with the former's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. U. w. cooper. They returned Sunday evening to their homo in Coos county. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Shaw of Roseburg were speakers at the Melrose-EIgaroso Townsend meet ing Friday evening at tho Elgarose playshed. Vic Wynter, who has raised a patch of perfectly "grand" prize winning tomatoes on the Henry Adams ranch, is peddling them by truck to coast towns. A Mr. Raihbuu. who lives m Bear Hen hollow, east nf town, re cently found a little fawn whose mother had been killed. Tho imoy deer was nearly dead from starva tion and the kind hearted man took It and fed it until it was strong enough to get about, lie then gave it to Vic Wynter. Miss Willamelta Logsdou, who lias been attending summer school at Kugeiie returned here Monday for a iihort visit with relatives be fore leaving Wednesday on a mouth's tour to Alaska. Mi ami Mrs. Chris Beecroft. of Rose burg, spent Sunday visiting with Mrs. BeccroftB parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. RHtes, and her brother- in-law and sister, Mr. and Mis, John Winter and children from Eu gene, who were here on their way to Grants Pass, where Mr. Winter has been transferred for his work as brake m on on the S. P. Mrs. Hatiie Sherman, who has been ill since spring when she suf fered a stroke of paralysis, was able to get out to church last Sun day. Her son and wile, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Sherman, wlto had been vacationing at Reedsport, stopped for a short visit with her Sunday on their way to their homo in Roseburg. Mrs. Glenn Richardson and daughters, Olennda and Melba, moved to the coast last week to bo with Mr. Richardson, who has been working there for some time past. George Wert a, local cannery man of Grunts Pass, was in town for a short while Tuesday, on his way to Eugene with a truck load of last year's pack of tomatoes for sale. The annual hegira of moving has begun. Mrs. Saunders made the first move by vacating her cottage on 2nd street which was purchased and moved into by Dr. and Mrs. Hess: Mr. and Mrs. Ru dolph Mickelson then moved into the Thompson house where the Hesses had been living. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Easton are moving in to the Cormitt house on 2nd street litis week and Mrs. May Brewer is moving to the Easton house which is owned by Mrs. Emma Buiek. Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Kusler have been working in the Kusler store while their son, Marlon, is doing some outside work lately. Mrs. Harry Ktimson or ISorth Myrtle was in town Saturday. She reports that iter husband, who has been in the veterans' hospital in Roseburg since June, suffering of heart trouble, IS somewhat im proved. Harry Rice and Ho Dyer return ed Monday from a week's outing at Belknap springs. Virginia Whitney, who spent last week camping with her friends. Mr. and Mrs. William Hughes, at Tyee, wher Mr. Hughes Is working, returned home Saturday. Mrs. R. M. Shirtcliff and Mrs. Violet Hendry were Myrtle Creek visitors Sunday from their home in Roseburg. Mrs. J. O. VanWinkle and son, Richard, -and Mrs. Van Winkle's mother, Mrs. Addte Hutchinson, who has been spending some time here, with her daughter. Mis. Bess Cooper, left Friday for Harrlsburg where Mrs. Hutchinson win visit for a while with the VanWinkle family before going on to her homo in Bremerton, Wash. Orval Baldwin has enlisted In the navy but will not bo leaving for some time. George McDonald, postmaster and merchant at Remote, brought his son. On Sunday John Jackson was aide to he carried over to the Dieckman home for a visit, with the rela tives in their reunion. Mr. Jack son has bpen very ill but is con siderably improved.
