MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 1936, FIVE STATE FI DATES ISEBIG'S HMD SALEM, Aug. 10 Two official bands, the Roseburs and Salem Municipal bands, wilt make music lor the Diamond Jubilee Oregon State fair, which will open in Sal em September 7, for a full week's j)t or ram. Gue3t bands from other towns wiH appear on the fair grounds from day to day. - J. i. GUImore i director of the 32-piece Itoseburg music aggrega tion, and incidentally has played under H. N. Stoudenmeyer, who is director of the 27-piece Salem baud. Gitlmore is a former member o! the Willis McKiroy baud. He dJ rerted the Willamette Steel and Iron WorliS band at Portland and in 1913 the Texas State band at Strawn, Texas. He'also had charge of the Visalta and Coalinpa, CaH . forma, and the St. Johns bands and played with the Portland Symphony orchestra for two years. He directed the Bend Municipal baud until 1932, when he was ap pointed director of the Roseburg Municipal band and the lioseburg prize school band. The Roseburg musicians will be on the fairgrounds Monday, Tues day and Wednesday of the fair with both official bands to p!a; Wednesday and the Salem band to finish the week. U. S. FLAG WAVES HI HIM BRKCKENRiDGE, Colo., Aug. IS (AP) The American fjag rippled over "new territory" today as the conquest of the west was completed. Thirteen hundred square miles bought from Napoleon Bona parte for approximately three cents an acre in the heart of Colorado, was formally annexed with flag raising ceremonies Saturday. The land, rich in mineral and timber, lies between the region acquired through the Louisiana purchase of !Su3 and the area north of the Rio Grande river -which Mexico ceded to the United States after the war of 1S46-4K. Scant knowledge of western geo graphy was responsible for the oversight by which this "no man's -land" was not included in other formal additions to American ter ritory, Jessie M. In two special Pullmans convoyed by 100 Legionnaires and their wives, Klamath Fail Ameri can Legion Drum Corps (above) 1934 state champions, will detrain Tuesday evening lor the largest American Legion convention ever held in Oregon. . Losing out by five hundredths of one point to Portland last year In The Dalles for the state championship, the corps will again ente state competition, having 23 players, including the drum major, on the field. In parade and other appearances the Klamath corps wdi die- play 37, this including their color guard which will be in dress parade. Mayor Willis Mahoney and city council will send a special motorcycle police escort to convoy the Klamath players to the Hoseburg con vention. ... Louie Arnold, legionnaire of Klamath post, the police escort, is the largest cop in Oregon, weighing 289 pounds, and standing six foot 3 inches tall.
