Menu of the Week By Joan Andrews Sausage Rolls Enticing Dish Our Feathered Friends r io On warm summer days, when meals are prepared with the least work, try the one-dish meal. It con sists of such combinations as meat, eggs, cheese, and starchy vegetables. It is easily prepared and is delicious. One-Dish Meals Afford Relief From Kitchen Tasks On Hot Days THERE always are days when the rush of other work seems to make meal preparations some what of a burden. It is at such times that the one-dish meal comes to the rescue. Such a dish can be made to combine the types of food which go to make a well balanced meal; meat, fish,' eggs, cheese, starchy vegetables or cere als, and even some kinds of fruit. The flavor of the foods, whether two or more kinds are used, must blend and the method of cooking must be suited to the foods which are combined in the one-dish. To conserve time fend work spent In cooking these dishes, an- other important aid should not be forgotten, that of using special cookery or devices, such as the tireless cooker, the Dutch oven, the pressure cooker, and the ever convenient casserole. For the one-dish meal any one of these devices is excellent To refresh the memory, several one-dish combinations are sug gested here. Among them may be found some family favorites: Swiss steak with Franconia pota toes and browned carrots; corned beef hash with chopped peppers; breaded pork chops with sweet po tatoes and sliced apples; lamb ste v with vegetables, en casse role; meat balls with stuffed onions; Spanish rice; pot pie with vegetables; casserole of rice and mutton; braised tongue with car rots, onions, and celery; stuffed hearts with browned onions and string beans; chicken a la Creole with peppers and okra; boiled q dinner of corned beef and vege tables. These things are sunshine, sanitation, proper feeding, and fresh air. Any dog, no matter what breed, size, shape, or color, needs the -free, open world to run in part of every day. Do not fool yourself that your dog as well as your neighbor's dog would rather be in the wild wet woods than in any stuffy steam-heated apartment or the cement court of a kennel. Soft pillows mean little to a healthy dog. The cool weeds of an empty lot are more to his liking. A dog's nose is more sensitive than yours. Put in kettle and cover with cold water, bring slowly to the boiling point, boil for a few minutes, and re move scum and reduce heat. Fin ish cooking at a lower tempera ture. Remove to a hot platter and cook the vegetables in the liquid from which the meat has been re moved. If too salty add hot water. Too much salt will wilt the vege tables and spoil the flavor. The beets should be cooked separately or canned beets may be used. If not too salty, the liquid makes an excellent soup. Cheese, Salmon Loaf PREPARE 1 cup cream sauce. Reduce the heat and stir In until melted V pound cheese, di- d. Season with H teaspoon salt, teaspoon paprika and few grains cayenne. ' Prepare 1H cups mashed pota toes. Grease a baking dish and spread the mashed potatoes in it. Cover them with V the sauce. Next place in the dish a layer of drained, skinned and boned sal mon. Cover with the remaining sauce. Bake in a moderate oven 350' .for 30 minutes. Banana Cake Blend m cups sugar and cup butter until they are very light and creamy. Beat in one at a time 2 eggs. Sift btfor meaiuring 2' eupi ct flour. Rvilft with: ' fipoon baking powd.r ttaipoon iod 'l t.aipoort i.lt Put through a sieve 1 cup riced bananas and add 1 teaspoon van illa, and V cup sour milk. Add the sifted ingredients to the butter mixture In about 8 parts alternately with thirds of the banana mixture. Beat the bat ter aftei each addition until it is smooth. Bake cake in two greased layer pans in a moderate oven 860' for about 30 minutes. . Place between the layers 2 bananas, sliced. There are over a dozen ways to perform this trick, but it has been steadily improved upon until now it is one of the most amazing tricks of modern magic! To those who "don't know how," the only solution of this trick seems to be mental telepathy! So get out your Secret Code and let's find out. EFFECT: This is what to say and do while performing the Tele phone Trick. After you have per formed the two tricks in lesson number one, turn to your audi ence and say: "You have just witnessed two Hindu tricks. I will now attempt to entertain, and fool you, with something a little different in the way of magic. I will try and prove to you that it is possible for one magician to send thought waves, through the air, to another magician, no matter how far away he is. Most people would call this 'mental telepathy,' but we magicians call it 'tel-a-magic be cause we use a telephone to prove that we have really been able to send our thought message W IOW, will some member of NJ the audience please call out the name of his favorite card, or, if you haven't a favorite card, just name any card at all." Once a Crow spots a coin, piece of tin or any shiny piece of material, he is not satisfied until he has stolen and hidden it where he thintcs it will not be found. Crows' nests are large and bulky and are made, of twigs and flber. They lay four to five eggs, which are green, spotted with black. As to food, they are not very particular, their diet consisting of almost anything they can get. The Crow ranges west of the Rockies, from Canada to Mexico. ' Sister States RIVER OF THE WEST . SAILORS of Ave nations, Spain,' Russia, England, France and America, sought for many years to find a waterway into the State we know as Oregon. They knew there was such a river, they called it the "River of the West." A Bostonian named Robert , Gray, located the river in 1702, and he named it Columbia which was the name of his ship. He claimed the river in the name of the American republic and then he Builcd away to China. : Lewis andClark searched for the hendwaters of the Columbia., River thirteen years later. Then ; came trappers and traders from other countries. In 1843 the groat trek of tho Old Oregon Trail was begun. What stories of hardship, cholera epidemics, tragic deaths, discour-" ngement and heartache the old immigrant road of 1852 could tell. ' But these brave pioneers were to be the very backbone of a great state. Portland was built near the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. This settlement was a hundred miles from the sea and many peo ple thought it a poor location, but th) city's growth has proved they were wrong. With some changes in the river ocean liners come to the very city itself. To reach Portland from the ocean one travelB past twenty-nine miles of docks, wharves, mills and ship yards. There are seven bridges crossing the Willamette. Next to the Columbia River, Coos Bay ranks second as a har bor and It is located to the south west of Oregon,' At one time tho bnr of this bay was considered a great problem to skippers, but en gineering has smoothed out that handicap.
