STRONG-BRAND RECITAL IS VERY DELIGHTFUL AFFAIR OF THURSDAY ' The South Methodist church was beautifully decorated with ferns and baskets of flowerB Thursday evening for (he. recital presenting a group of piano pupils of Miss Gladys Strong and voice pupils of Mrs. Charles Brand. There was a large and thoroughly appreciative audience to greet the students in this, perhaps the most difficult part of the training of the young musician tbe . ability to perform before the public. It Is an ordeal for the beginners but there is no way ro overcome the natural ner vousness but to appear before friendly audiences as part of the training. Hence the Importance of pupils recitals. Those who appeared on the pro gram both Bang and played with real musical Insight. Tbe piano technique was fine, and the stu dents undertook nothing that was beyond them. Their stage presence was good and most important of all, those who had appeared In re cital before showed marked Im provement. Convention visitors often' re mark that Roseburg is the most musical of all the cities of Oregon outsiile of Portland, ,wlth our Mu nicipal band, our Junior band, the various orchestras, the Women's Choral club, the B. P. W. Glee club and the Roseburg Men's Glee club. If that statement Is true the explanation lies In tbe fine, con scientious work of the large num ber of competent music teachers who for a great many years have been devoting their lives to teach ing Roseburg's young people. Miss Elsie Reece and Miss Opal Beach. The bride wore an attrac tve frock of blue crepe. The bride Is well known In Rose burg, having been graduated from the local high school In 1929. She was employed at the ' office of Judge R. W. Marsters at the court house. Meetings Will Continue Through Summer In order that auxiliary members may be informed as to convention plans, Umpqua unit will meet reg ularly on the first and third Tues days of the month throughout the summer, with Mrs. Roy Young and members of the convention com mission in charge of the meet ings. It is Urged that all members of the unit support these meetings as there is a place for everyone in the preparations for the big con vention to be held in August. Card Party at Facility On Friday afternoon auxiliary members Joined with men at the facility In u grant bout ut contract bridge. These fellows bave been playing all winter and produced a quality of bridge that made it dif-i fit-Tilt going for their feminine op ponenu. A match gttme was play ed with R. II. Wllfton and Kdwurd Mathls opposing Mrs. E. V, Tandy and Mrs. Walter Fisher. While, Lady Luck more or less favored the women, Messrs. All In all, it was a very interesting af ternoon, and everyone seems to be in favor of an early return engage ment. Mrs. Ottila f.
