(AP) T hat Abraham Lincoln might have become known as the whip-sawyer president Instead of the rail-splitter if he had not fallen into a creek when an eight-year-old Kentucky boy, was suggested to day by an antique saw prized by Mrs. James L. Meredith as a Lin coln relic. The nine-foot, rust-eaten whip-saw,- encased at the Meredith home here, was presented, Mrs. Meredith related,' by Lincoln's father, Thomas, to a neighbor, Pet er R. Powell, as a reward for help ing save little Abe from drowning in the turbulent waters of rolling Fork creek shortly before the fam ily moved to Indiana. . Because whip-saws, used by the pioneers to hew logs Into boards, were not easily replaced, Mrs. Meredith's story of the saw, which Bhe says stie cun support with af fidavits, implied that Lincoln hud to be content with wielding an axe and an adz when he became big enough to work with timber. -ost for more than half a cen tury, the saw was recovered from the bed of the Nolln river at the! Hart county-urayson countv line in 192(j by a swimmer. George Logsdon. Hearing that Mrs. Meredith's brother, T. N. Smith of Hrnyson county was faniilinr with the tool's history, Logsdon gave It to him and he presented it to Mrs. Meredith. NEW YORK. Feb. 12. (AP) A frail, white-haired lady, who knew Abraham Lincoln when she was a little girl, celebrated the great, emancipator birthday by urging the republican party to find another Lincoln. Mrs. Mary Scott-Uda, now 91, spoke out at a meeting of the re publican committee of 100. "Lincoln wus frequently a guest in my father's house," she said. "1 remember one emergency when it was suggested that be should be a candidate for office. " 'Hoys, don't mind me,' he said. 'You must pick a man that can win.' "And that Is what you republi cans have got to do," Mrs. Scott Uda said. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Feb. 13 (AP) -r Declaring the new propos ed farm program is "a sincere at tempt" to meet constitutional limi tations set by the supreme court, Secretary Wallace today advanced three reasous for believing the plan would be valid. "We believe the supreme court will approve the new legislation," Wallace said at au Indian farm bureau meeting here, "If It rec ognizes any oue of tha three for lowing propositions: "1. The fuel of the natiou-wlde Interdependence of all commerce, from the humblest farm to the largest corporation. "2. The extent to w hich the doc trine of states' rights is being used as the final refuge for anti-social corporations. "3. Federal responsibility for the post war agricultural dilemma. "If it was the proper function of the federal government in war time to encourage farmers to plow up laud which should never have been plowed. In order to produce wheat for our allies; .if the federal government was Justified in en couraging the mining of our soil to supply a European demand which bus now disappeared; then it seems to me np less the federal Kovernment's proper function to encourage the return of that lund to grass and trees; to make it worth the farmers while to im prove the soil's fertility by plant- 1 ing sotl-buildmg crops. ' Still Criticizes Court Continuing his criticism of the supreme court's AAA decision, Wal ! lace said "most of us'' thought the adjustment act constitutional when it was passed. ( "Some of us, Including three jus , (ices of the supreme court," he added, "think so still.' The AAA, the secretary Baid "was closely in accord with the platlorms of both the great politi cal parlies of 1U32." On the occaslou of Lincoln's birthday, Wallace recalled Lin coln s dissatisfaction with some supreme court decisions. "He took the view," Wallace MERCER, Pn., Feb. 12. (AP George A. Hamilton, 91, recall ed today his favorite story of Presi dent Lincoln and the days of the war between the stutes, In which he fought. Four mules drawing the presH dent's carriage plunged Into a mud hole, Hamilton said, and the army driver released a flow of prolan-' ity that ceased only when the car riage renrhed dry ground.
