The steelhead run, according to the employes at the siate hatcheries, is the largest in recent years on the river. Fish are taking the darker (lies, and the gray hackle, royal coachman, car son and parmuchene belle are be ing used successfully. Mrs. Jessie Vosburgh entortain ed a large number of young folk Thursday In honor of Miss June Wiard of Roseburg, who, with her brother, Earl, is spending a few weeks at Idleyld park as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Vosburgh. A party was also given Sunday at Idleyld honoring Miss Helen Connine. Construction of an egg taking station has been started at Steam boat by the state fish commis sion. Qscar Shockley and Albert DoBernardl are assisting A. W. Lnnily in the construction work. Mr. and Mrs. J.oo M. Carnn are spending a week visiting with friends in Portland. Joe Welsh, of Pasadena, who has been spending several days at 1 J Roy E. Southard, evangelist, ar rived in Roseburg today from Long view to conduct a series of evan gelistic services at the Bible Stan dard mission. Mr. Southard Is ac companied by his father, mother and sister, who assist him in his religious work. The first meeting is to be held tonight at 8 o'clock and services will continue for several weeks, with meetings scheduled every night except Monday. A lire, thought to have been started by a lightning bolt Mouday afternoon, was being fought in the ML Reu ben diBtrlct near the head of Whiskey creek by a crew of 20 men Tuesday afternoon. E linnet Belcher of this city took a truckload of tools, supplies and 10 men to the Benton mine Tuesday "forenoon. Another crew of men from Grants Pass arrived here at noon on their way to help combat the fire on Whiskey creek. The fire fighteis are under the supervision of C. L. Cooper, of Grants Pass, U. S. forest ranger. A fire was burning on the mountainside east and south of the Capitol auto camp on the Pa cific iiighway about 4 miles from this city Tuesday afternoon. This fire started in the brush near the auto camp in the forenoon. William Schroeder, firo warden in this district, had a crew of local men, augmented by a number of men sent opt from Roseburg by the Douglas County Fire Patrol association, fighting this fire Tuesday afteruuon and evening and expected to have it under con trol by Wednesday forenoon. AZALEA Picnicking at. Idleyld Park Ad AZALEA, Aug. 13. Miss Louise Lesh of Glendale visited over Sat urday and Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J. Blanchard and family. Rolln Johns left for Crater lake last Wednesday, where he has em ployment. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hull left Sun day for their home in California, after spending two weeks with relatives here. Mr. Hull is a machinist in a small town near Fresno. Frank S. Jantzer returned to his home hero Wednesday from Jump-off-Joe creek, where he has been visiting his mother, Mrs. Bert Anient, since May. Mr. and Mrs. Buzzoll and child ren of Fernvale. visited with Mrs. Buzze.U's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Warren, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Phil Kelley, of Glendale visited friends and rela tives here Saturday. Mrs. Lowell N. Curtis and baby son. Lee Stanford, came home from Grants Pass Sunday. Robert L. Mayhew, who is em ployed at Crater lake this summer, spent ths weekend with friends here. Friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford V. Lehman received announcements telling of the birth of a son. at their Portland home. August the second. This is their fourth child but first son. Mr. and Mrs. Lehmap are former residents of Azalea.. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Swan and chlldrep of Looklugglnss spent a couple of duys last week at the jipiuu of Mrs. Mary Boot)). Mr. and Mrs. St. Clair of Cal ifornia visited a few days with Mr. and Mrs.' F. J. McCabe last week. On Saturday they were ac companied by Frauk J. Wilson, and went to Myrtle Creek to visit their father. Jack Wilson. Jantzer came over from Bonanza Thursday and returned to that place Sunday. Mrs. Jantzer is coming back within a few days, as Azalea school, which sho will teach, starts the eighth of September. Mr. Jantzer is log scaler for the UlinoiB Lumber com pany at Bonanza. Darwin Johns went back to his work at Crater lake, Sunday, after nn enroreeil vacation due to a ! cut anil bruised hend. HA he was hit with a rock last week. Mrs. Hollin Johns accpmuanled him, and spent tho week-end with her bus band. Mrs. Robert Pullen of Burns Is visiting her parents. Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Simmons of Medford spent the week-end with Mrs. Simmons' parents, Mr. an(--Mrs. Wm. McMichacl. Mrs. Matt Dahl and solo Louis, of Grcsham are visiting Mrs. Dahl's mother, Mrs. Mary Booth, for a few days. As the first step in the formula tlau of a national program of highway beautification, the legis lative committee of the American Automobile association will short ly lauuch a survey of road condi tions throughout the country. An announcement to this effect was made today by Thos. p. Henry of Detroit, Mich., president of tho national motoring body. Mr. Henry pointed out that the survey had been authorized by tho receut annual convention of tile A. A. A. in Asheville and cited tho resolution calling for a program pf highway beautification, as follows; ''Advertising signs along the main highways of the country ilipuld be so controlled and regu lated as not to piar the beauty of the landscnpe or constitute a haz ard to safe driving.
