SECRET BILLOTS The nominating convention of the republican state committee Saturday was a very peaceable ses sion, with the exception of the battle over the method of ballot ing, according to Dr. K. B. Slew art, delegate from Douglas county, who served as chairman of the committee on resolutions, one of the most responsible appointments In the organization. The open balloting proposal, Dr. Stewart stated, was injected into the convention issues, long before the meeting was called to order, and created much discussion. The written ballot, however, was ap proved by the majority of dele gates, who were of the belief that it would eliminate much political jockeying. Dr. Stewart was well pleased with the committee organisation, and particularly with the election of Floyd Cook as chairman, who was nominated by the Douglas county delegate and elected with out opposition. Dr. Stewart nominated A. C. Maratern for governor by ballot and continued his vote for the lo cal candidate for the first four balllots. receiving one vote also from Coos county. Stooping over, he grasped Rob bie's arm and held on until help ar rived. Just below the stream makes a 30-foot drop. Two men, traveling in a Whippet coupe, were reported to have perpetrated holdups at Dallas and Salem. They later picked up a girl who is believed to be accom panying them. Coqullle reported Sunday night that two young men, in a new Ford roadster, held up a traveling salesman on the road near Co quillft nnd relieved their victim of about $20. DOUGLAS ESCAPES BIG THUNDERSTORM Douglns county forests escaped very fortunately from a severe thunderstorm yesterday afternoon. The storm drifted in over the Rogue river valley, but skirted south and east of Douglas county and Bwung east of the Cascades nto the Deschutes forest. It is not known whether or not the light ning started any fires. The storm was accompanied by a light rain fall. No fires wero reported over the week end bv either the forest service or the Douglas fire patrol.
