After a wedding sup per aboard the boat, Faith anil Noll sail away. Among the crew are Dan'l Tobey. second mate, who has loved Faith since childhood, and Koy, Faith's brother. There lb little privacy, but Faith Is content with Noll's love. Reminiscing. Faith recalls her childhood admira tion for Noll's strength which led to love. CHAPTER IV. When Noll came down into the cabin Faith was waiting for him. She had put on a dressing-novi n, a warm and woolly thing Hint she and liesH hud made of a heavy blanket, to protect her against Hie chill winds or the sea. ller braids were upon her shoulders, her hull' parted evenly above her broad brow. Her eyea were steady and sweet and calm. Faith lifted her eyes and came closer to bim. He took her rouKlily in his arms, and she lifted one aim and threw It around his .thick neck and drew his f::ce down. Faith, on her part, studied the men about her, and watched over Noll, and gave herself to the task of being a good wife and helpmate to him. The first weeks of the cruise were arduous ones, us they are apt to he on a w haler, for of the whole crew more than half wero green hands recruited from the gutters, the farms, the slums weak men. in many cases, rolled by wrong living; slnck-inuscled. Noll was the mauler, the com inander. when his voice bellowed along the decks even the greenesl man leaped and desperately strove in his efforts to obey. Noll was the dominant man. and Faith with pleasantly afraid i him and his roaring tones. She loved being afraid of him. There were four officers aboard the "Sully Sims." These lour, with ljoy In his rapacity of ship's boy lived with Noll and Faith In the main cabin. They were Faith's family, lllg Henry Ham, the male, was a man of slow wit hut quick fist; a man with a gift or stub DoruneBS that passed for mastery. The men of his watch, and espe cially the men of his boat, feared HI in acutely. He tauthl them this rear In the Hint week of the cruise by the simple teachings of blows. James Tichel, the third mate, wus a thin little old man, given to occasional bursts of tigerish ruge In which he was the match for any muii aboard. In his second week he took the biggest man in his boat and beat him into a helpless clucking wreck of bruises. There after lliere was no need for him to Btriko a second time. Willis Cox was fourth mate. He wus a youngster; Ibis his first cruise in the cabin. He had been protnoled from the fo'c's'le by Noll Wlug on Noll's last voyage. Fullh, (luring the first weeks, was profoundly puzzled nnd Inter ested hy this transformation. There was a new strength in all of them which she marked and admired. At the same time there were mau tfestullous hy which she was ilia quieted. Noll Wing--her Noll hud changed wllh the rest. Ho had changed not only In his every-duy hearing, but in his relullnns will) her. She was troubled, from the very beginning, by these chungcs. und biio wus troubled by. her own reactions to them. The pitiless intimacies of their life logeiher 111 the cabin of the "Sally Sims" were hard for Faith. Fullh. without being vain, hud the lever onco and respect for herself which goes by the name of modesty. Her body was as sacred lo her as her soul. The necessity that they were under of dressing and undressing In u tiny room not eight feet loug was a pcrpetuul torment to her. She had been, when she tuuriied prepared for disillusionment. Faith was not a child; she was a woman. Bin' had the wisdom lo know thai no man Is a heroice figure in a nightshirt. ConHlnVraTTIe road Work Ih now beiiiK carried on by the county court in various sections of the county. , The Kellotrg grading job, which was done under contract, is now ncuriiiK completion. The road has been graded and gravelled for a distance of about two miles, the new fcrade beiiiK much wider and on better alignment than the old road. The coat of the Improvement Is to be about $12,000. The court has also let the con tract for the grading of a three mile section of the Loon lake road at a cost of about $8,000. This will eliminate the worst section of 'he Loon lake road and will con nect the new county road with the plunk road through the valley. (.lading and gravelling is in pro gress on the Cow creek road for a distance of about a mile. The cost Is. to be approximately $4,000. The srading on the Melrose road has been finished under contract and the county Is to start gravelling immediately. The grading cost is to he about $.1,500. Two new bridges hove been con structed on the canyon road be tween Tenmlle and Keglon and the road has been widened and im proved. This job was done by the county road crew at a cost of $3,600. The county crew is now grading the Lee Love road, eliminating a! bad section between (iarden valley: and Wilbur. It is estimated that1 the expense wIL he $1,500. The work of grading the Ump qua lighthouse road from Winches ter IJay has been completed and that road is soon to be gravelled, the cost being about $3,000. The largest project now In pro gress Is on the Tiller-Trail road where the county Is spending $16, 500. An effort was made to secure government cooperation, but funds were not allotted. However, when the federal funds are available, the county will receive credit for the money now being expended. The work is being done by force ac count, and a large amount of heavy rock is being moved. Tin section now being improved will make the road easily passable. It fs expected to complete the work by Septem ber 1. The county lias set up a rock soul so long as they both sould live. She was loyal to htm, even In her thoughts, as to herself. For this wap Faith; she was Noll's for ever. She thought that what she felt was hidden; hut Dan'l Tobey had eyes to see. In iUin'l Tobey'o boat, a little man named Manger. It was he whom Dan'l ruled by a superior tongue, deriding the man and scorching him with jests that made Manger crimson wtih shami for himself. Mauger was a greeny; he was a product of the worst con ditions or the city. He was little and shrunken nnd thin, and his shoulders curled forward as though to hug and shelter his weak chest. Nevertheless, there was a ratllko spirit1 i'i tN ninn. and a ratlike gleam In his h.ack. Utile eyes. He was one of those men who inspire dislike, even when thev strive to win the liking of Ihelr fellows. The very fo'c's'le baited him.
