IS MONEY LOSER
MIAMI, ma., March 21. More
than forty American girls who
participated in the recent Miami
beauty pageant were on their way
home today thanks to a special
meeting of the city cominioHioner.s
which produced their railroad
fares.
The commissioners, told thatj
tne pageant association had an In
debtedness of $24,734, appropriat
ed $4,660 from t he city's publicity
fund to help the girls get out of
the city.
Some of the forty or more girls
had prize money due them and
others had been unable to collect
traveling expenses from the pa
geant association.
Among bills unpaid, the council
was told, was one for ....6,910.88
for railroad transportation.

Edward Donald Malcolm, of Poltal
loch, believed to have been the
last surviving flapper officer who
saw service In both the Crimean
w nr and lite Indian mutiny, died
today. He was ti'A years old,
During the Indian campaign he
was twice decorated for bravery.
Later he was commissioned for
service in Canada where bis en
gineering genius was brought Into
play. He was responsible for the
construction of a chain of three
forts to strengthen the defenses
of Quebec City on the south side
of tho St. Lawrence river.

LOS ANCELES, March 20. Four
indictments charging six persons
with bribery and conspiracy to
bribe, were officially announced to
day as having been voted by the
county grand jury, wMeh had spent
the morning investigating asserted
confessions and admissions that
bribes had been passed to Jurors In
the Julian petroleum fraud trials of
1928 to obtain acquittals.

Trapped on Mussel Hock, a crag

shore south of San Francisco, four
youths today awaited the coming
of low tide lo return to tne main
land.
The four, Mario JohnRon, Stan
ley CJarri. Charles Maloney and
George Crukolph, all of Daly City,

were not obtained, waded out to
the rock nt low tide yesterday, in
tending to remain until tho next
low tide.
The evening lido did not run low
enough to suit the quartet, al
though the other two boys waded
ashore. When the four finally
called for help, Jan Jalluk, a
coast guardsman, swam out to
them with a line and offered to
help them ashore hut they refused
and elected to remain throughout
the night.

A decree of divorce, on grounds
of desertion, was granted In the
circuit court today to James Win
throp Preshy, who brought suit
against Agnes Carleone Presby.
They were married at Vancouver,
Washington. April 5, 1923. The

After a three and one-half hour con
ference with the watje committee of
the street car men's union, officials
of the Pacific Northwest Public
Service company, formerly the Pa
cific Klectric Power company, were
no nearer a Holulion to the vaj-'e
problem than before today.
Franklin T. Griffith, president of
the utility, said that .March 27 had
been set as the date for another
conference ut which he would hear
union officials ask for a wage in
crease for trolley car employes.

pend on thft purchase of new
equipment for Its shops here in
the next few months, according
to E. L. King, superintendent. It
is estimated that in another five
years there-will be 1C00 families
connected with the railroad center
being developed here.

found late yesterday by Charles
Klesllng, who was fishing In the

The body of Edward Syfert, who
was drowned Willi Burt was found
February 22. Both bodies were
found r.everal miles from where
the boat in which they were rid
ing was found rammed by ice.
