The right of a man and hta wife to ho demon stratively affectionate In the gloom of a movie theatre has bisen Kiveu triumnhftnt vindication hv CM- chro jury. Peter and Ruby PoKert, man and wire, had gone to the Crawford theatre and while there did en gage in what has come to he known, even in courts of law, as necking. There is a certain group of citizenry which frowns on such things, and the first thing the Doeerts knew the management had passed the word along that the Dogerts must .never unrkea the door of the theatre again. But they did darken It and de manded apology when a doorman gently hut firmly prevented their A Kiss for By MAY CHAPTER 47. "Thank God you've seen the daylight, kiddo!" was Marie's fer vent reception of Corlnna's tidings that they were both going ionight to Mortimer's party. "It just made me sick to see you waste your time and looks and op portunities on that high-hat . Mal vey." she added. "With t your snacks in cheap cafeterias and rambles on Broadway,- and window-shopping without ever getting a present, where did it lead you?" Corinna thought, her lips white and set: "Into a morass of mis ery!" Marie proceeded: "You were ir ritated and disappointed and up set, oh! many's the time. And he was so darn selfish, too, over his beastly evening classes " Corinna said, . faintly: "You It isn't fair to blame him, Marie for being ambitions." "Ambitious is right! 111 tell the world he's the prize little climber. Doesn't give a darn how he stands you up so long as he gets his foot ing 'With those Ci'isswells! But to nlght'U show him something that'll make him sit up and take notice. And you aren't going in any old rag either. 'We're both coming out in the latest French models." "Oh, Marie, you couldn't "Ah, couldn't I? You wait till the show's over." ''You mean you're going to bor row something from the theatre?" "Certainly 1 do. Why shouldn't we step out with the best of 'em?" "If Ihe manager finds out you've done it asain : " "What of ft? I'm fed up on tl;o show. He told me yesterday I was a flop. I've halt a mind in any case to fire myself." Marie was reckless. She had made it up in a half-and-half fash ion, with her erstwhile beau, Peter J. Pattison. But, doubting his ve racity and having been deceived about ihe fact of his marriage, she varied from ardor to uneasiness. She had a date with him tonight, and It would help to even things up a bit by breaking it . . . Oh, tit for tat. That was a good motto. "You told Mortimer to pome for us at 11:30, you say? You're sure you made it clear to him that I'd be with you?" "Yea. I wouldn't go on any other condition," replied Corinna, truth fully If not over-tactfully. But Marie didn't mind whether she were welcome or not. so long as the pickings were good, and the 1UII 1.1BI (tllU 111 Ull IUMB, "I hope he brings ub both a bushel-ful of orchids. Marie proceeded: "Orchids 'ud make my Pete as mad as a hatter Now that he knows I'm wise to the wife and kids in Jersey, he makes that a sort of excuse to go slow on the decorations." ."Oh, Marie, it isn't playing fair. I wish you wouldn't go out with him." "AJlss Prunes and Prisms! 'Tis the pot calling the kettle black . . . or very nearly." ' "I've never had anything to do with married men " "But now that he's after Miss Van Wyck. you just hate to give up Malvey?" That cut. Corinna turned her back upon the speaker, setting the percolator on the stove, and con triving to answer, airily:, "it's nothing to me what Mal vey does. We're both perfectly free to go out and enjoy ourselves." "Whoops, dearie! Attagirl!" WOULD he he there, at Morti mer's party? Corinna was rendered much more vivid, startling . . . When Mario rushed back from the the atre she gave a funny little smoth ered shriek at sight of her. "Corinna! Koop! You look a swift one! Just casting his eyes at you, old Mortimer'U get all burned up!" "Am I so awful?" Corinna paused with the lip-stick in mid air. Her hand was shaking. "1 can take it all off in two jiffies." "You'll do nothing of the sort. 1 was only knocked cold by your beauty, kiddo. You're streets ahead of any of the lookers in our show . . .! But it kind of alters you. 1 just couldn't get you yet Gosh I if that Malvey could only see you!" "He'd hate me," thought Corin na, wearily. She watched Marie rip open a paper parcel she pro duced from under her cloak, con taining two evening dresses. "This is for you. You're bigger. It's a wow it's called 'Green Dev ils.'" Cascades of variegated chiffon in all shades of green made up this striking garment. Laughed Marie: "Everything wicked's there, from creme-de-menthe to absinthe!" It was a sophisticated dress, and fitted the slimness of Corinna to perfection. "Marie, I oughtn't to! You'll get in awful trougle If they found out or if I should spilt something " "Nix on the doldrums! This is your nlcht of joy! You'll wear it!" Corinna looked lovely in the diaphanous gown. The make-up had accentuated her beauty, giving It a brittle, gleaming quality. - (Oh, laugh! Be gay! Fight down this misery!) "There's Mortimer,!' breathed Marie, darting to the door and ushering jhe young man Into the apartment. (Copyright, 1029, King Features Syndicate, Inc.)
