BUSINESS AREA OF VERA CRUZ BURNED (Auoctitrd Prat Lcatrd Wlr) VERA CRUZ. Mexico. Feb. 13. Fire inflicted a considerable loss in the business section of this city during the night. The blaze broke out In a hat factory and spread rapidly to adjoining build ings and to an armory, where ex plosion of stored ammunition made a spectacular display. In the midst of the fire the city's water supply failed and the fire men were almost helpless to com bat the flames. Jail break shortly before noon yes terday. They were overpowered by Sheriff E. H. Lister and deputies after a short encounter. Three steel hack saws were recovered. The jail from which the men sought to escape was built 50 years ago. GRANTS PASS JAIL BREAK THWARTED JOHN R. Lions Hear Singers The Rose burg Mons club at its regular meeting last nisht was entertained by the Cacy brothers who present ed a number of vocal duets. A good attendance of Lions was re ported at the dinner meeting. Coos Junction Couple in City Mr. and Mrs. John A. C. King, or Coos Junction, were in Roseburg Wednesday visiting friends and shopping. Mr. King operates the Coos Junction service station and store. Back From Corvallls Miss Bes sie Redbani, secretary of the coun ty health unit, returned lust night from a short visit at Corvalls. She visited with Dr. and Mrs. Frank Matthews, who recently moved to Corvallls, where Dr. Matthews 1b uastor of the uaptir.t church, and also enjoyed a short visit with Miss Jessie Smith, a student at the state college. Mrs. Church Called to Portland Mrs. H. C. Church left yester day for Portland, where she- was called to be with her husband, Dr. Church, who is a patient at '.he Veterans' hospital. Return Here Yesterday Mr. and Mrs. Georee Witters returned to their home in this city yester day, after spending the past sev eral days in Portland visiting friends nnd transacting business. Hospital Patients T. L. Weav er, of Canyonville, underwent a major operallon yesterday morn ing at Roseburg General hospital with Dr. Maxson, of Myrtle Creek, and Dr. E. B. Stewart in attend ance. Mrs. Elmer Rogers, of Glide, and Mrs. Matthew M. Ad ams, of South Deer Creek, were admitted to the hospital yesterday for medical treatment. Mrs. W. T. Hart, and Mrs. O. T). McAllister, of Roseburg, were able to leave the hospital yesterday and return to their homes. Will Leave Hospital Soon Ac cording to word received here. Mrs. O. V. Logsdon, of Kiddle, will soon he able to leave Dr. Cof fey's hospital in Portland, and re turn to her home.
