Health Bulletin SCARLET FEVER " fSiato Hoard of Health) In 1!I2!I. J4il cases of scarlet fever were reported In the state of Oregon. Last month there was an increase in the number of cas es. Fortunately, the average case of scarlet fever in light, neverthe less seventeen children died last year of this disease. Scarlet fever is known as one of the most dan gerous of the children's diseases. The after effects, though often re mote, are frequent and severe, and they include not only rheumatism, hut heart disease and "diseases of the kidneys. The most common complication of scarlet fever is running ears, and the inflamma tion that Is set up Is the outstand ing cause of deafness and deaf mutism lu children previously nor mal. Scarlet fever like measles be gins with symptoms of a cold in the nose nnd throat. Like measles it is spread hy personal contact with cases of tho disease. It is snread hy so-called droplets thousands of moisture particles sprayed Into the air from the throat and nnse when the patient la'ks. coughs or rneezes. While it is no easy matter to control the spread of scarlet fev er, every effort should he made to prevent Its spread.' Not only should the actual and suspected cases be isolated hut alro the chil dren who have been exposed. This applies to all children who have not previously had the disease and who have played br worked with a scarlet fever patient within three da's before the rash appeared. We are too careless in taking chances of spreading unrerog n i zed infections. The present problem of scarlet fever should teach parent to have a keen sense of personal and family responsi bility in matters of disease. Tin habit of taking precautions should be rormcd.
