Electric lights have recently been put in the school building and this was the first meeting held since the lights had been installed. Fles read the latest communications from Miss Forsytiie. Presbyterian mis sionary in China. Miss Forsytiie is a sister of Mrs. Roy Achor, for merly of this city, who recently moved to Oregon City. An unusually fine attendance of members was present for the aft ernoon. The occasion was Mr. O'Malleys birthday. The table was 'lovely with a large birthday cake, covered with candles, grac ing the center. An eight o'clock dinner was served by Mrs. O'Mal ley. Refreshments will be st i ved b a ionium Ice iu charge. t M P H AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY ACTIVITIES Canyonvlll Host to Auxiliary An enthusiastic meeting of Ump qua unit was held Tuesday night, January 7th at Canyonville with a good representation from the var ious towns throughout the county. Mrs. James A. Soules, president, was in charge, and a num ber of interesting reports were made covering Llie various branches of work which is being carried on by the unit. The busi ness meeting was followed by a dance which lasted until a late hour. Refreshments w 4 r e en Joyed afterward. Committee Reports Given Mrs. Walter Kurtz reported for the child welfare committee that four Christmas boxes were given to needy families. Mrs. Clinton Gorthy gave a report on the Christ mas entertainment at the soldiers' home. Each veteran at the home received a present this year from the auxitlury state department und the local unit presented each World war veteran with a suit able gift. On Christmas eve an entertainment was given at the home following the dinner hour and the presents were distributed. The membership now stands at 278 paid members for the new year which is a record number for the local unit and lor the state of Oregon. ' The flower report was given by Mrs. J. M. Judd. The report on the Rod Cross roll call showed that 446 members were secured which Is the larg est membership secured in the county for a number oE years. New Committees Appointed The president appointed Mrs. Walter Kuris and Mrs. Grant Os born to serve as visiting commit tee until next meeting. The next meeting which will be Myrtle Creek. Lodge Has Christmas Party The following Christinas lodge affair was held In Myrtle Creek and was sent to the News-Review by a reader. Tne item was clipped from the Myrtle Creek Mail. Tue Sunday before Christmas was consecrated to the gathering of our greens vines, pine and ce dar, mistletoe,, ferns und e a. ties, and of makiug of wreathes., gar lands and final decorations. Ad ample and elaborate welcome wreath was put into position at either end ot the hall with smaller wreaths for the windows, each having its fan of red crepe paper. Garlands woven of pine and cedar placed at opposite corners, cross ing in center of room, an incandes cent bulb with a large red bow ot crepe paper, serving as a candle. In such an atmosphere it seem ed fitting to install a Christmas tree, which when trimmed and lighted, made one feel that one was in the midst of Santa's fairy laud. It was Christmas eve when the tree gladdened the wee Ones' eyes and the older ones as w ell. It came on Arbor Vitae's own lodge night, so business was hurriedly disposed of and a fireplace bearing stock ings wus buiided by the tree. San ta sent a hurried message so we knew he wus on the way and In a short time he came hurrying In, for he had much tq do before 'tis light. The children were asked to come and relieve Santa of his pack. The grownups were next in line, and Santa remembered us al), and even some who were not there, when a sister or brother was passing near an absent sister's or brother's home. Others will receive theirs at the last lodge night this year, which comes on New Year's eve. A large crowd was present. After dismantling the tree, n so cial time and games were enjoyed by the children. After lodge and before Santa's arrival, a Christmas program was rendered, those taking part were Audrey Starbuck and Joyce . Ady, tiny tots, but each did her part well; a piauologue by Mrs. Bryan Dleckman; a medley of Christmas songs by Mrs. A. W. Caswell. Holy Night was sung by all. There are paths that wind and wind; But the art of being kind. ! Citiens Cooperate in Conserving Tin Foil The community Is functioning one hundred per cent in the con servation of tin foil for the Shrl ti er's hospital for crippled children In Portland. An interesting epi sode was told by a unit member who was an eye witness to the happening. It happened thus: One of our town dignitaries was walking down the street und hap pened to see a piece of bright tin loll lying discarded In his path. He immediately stopped to pick it up but in his earnestness of pur pose he failed to see that there was another man Just as sincere of purpose who also saw whut hW saw and had the same urge at theT same time. But, oh well w ho wouldn't take a few bumps' if necessary to further a cause as worthy as this. Knights of Pythias Hold Installation of 1930 Officers The Knights of Pythias lodge met ou Wednesday evening at tne K. P. hail for the Alpha lodge No. 47 installation of liW) officers. Air. C. W.
