eran who served in the front line
trenches without getting a scratch,
was wounded by gun shot last
night when he too!; his rllle down
to clean. The bullet entered his
body above the heart and came oul
in his back.
FIRE DEPARTMENT CALLED
The fire department was called
out yesterday afternoon by a flue
fire at the Dave Sham brook home
on North Jackson street. The tire
did no damage. Smoke filled the
attic and poured out through the
roof, causing spectators to believe
that the house was on fire inside.
The fire department also turned
out for an alarm shortly aft-r '
o'clock yesterday morning. Some
one saw the stationary Richfield
beacon shining on a cloud of
smoke, giving every indication of
a big blaze.

Well, folks, seven months ago
w!fo and I landed In Roseburg.
Not much of an event to the world
at large, but to us -to me, espe
cially It was quite an event. Horn
and raised in Susquehanna county.
Penn., and spending over BO years i
within her boundaries, it was quite
n move, casting aside the associa
tions of years to satisfy a dream.
We all have dreams sleeping
dreams and waking dreams. My'
dream as built on a few words j
spoken by some friends at least 25
years ago. They told me they j
spent some time in Kosenurg, aim
enlarged on Its climate and vego-'
tation. Enough said the seed was
sown, the dreain grew.
About nine monlhs ago I found
a lady's name hi a journal, wrote
her, received ti satisfactory an
swer. The dream bore fruit. We
were then living In Jefferson,
Ohio. Someway, your chamber of
commerce got wind of me and at
once came a shower of jazz niut.ic.
No flies, no mosquitoes, no thun
der, no lightning. Mentioned no
work, which I suppose was an
oversight, which Is pardoned.
The first Sunday night we were
here the lightning shorted the
lights where we were staying. We
have found flieB; mosquitoes
found us, but they were not Jer
sey mosquitoes. By the way, 1
could enjoy seeing a couple of Jor-
81 es buzzing up to Harding:
Anyhow, folks, we made no mis
take In Roseburg. As a boy I had
a healthy imagination and always
Saw things as through a micro
scope. But tell the TRUTH about
Oregon, for It needs no micro
scope. A microphone would do
better work. Never for a moment
has either wife or I felt Bony that
we made the choice of Roseburg,
Oregon.
