THE GUARD rpJJE campaign for members X Oregon national guard goes forward and with fair re suits. Even so, the fact remains that twenty more recruits aretneeded within the next week or two or Douglas county will.lose its guard unit and the armory will be closed. The encouraging thing about the recruiting campaign is that theue is a good foundation on which to build. The company is now officered by men of the highest type. Undesirable material has been weeded from the ranks and the entire per sonnel of the local unit is of a character to be proud of. Merubership in the company offers-any young man over ciglteen years of age an opportunity for interesting exer cisejand enjoyment with pay. A few likely candidates have hesitated to enlist because thejj were afraid their employers would object to them tak ing he necessary time off to attend the summer encamp ment. Employers, who arc interested in seeing the guard company maintained to strength, and danger of its discon tinuance banished permanently, should tell their employees, whtllmight wish to enlist in the guard company, that they can 'be spared from work for the encampment. All govern ment employees, who are enlisted in the national guard, are permitted to attend the summer encampments without pen altj;of any kind. .Young fellows, who have never been members of the comjjany and who are not familiar with the benefits of such work when properly conducted, do not realize the fun and good that they can get out of it. If any men who are. eligible to guard membership read this and are won derfog whether or not THEY should .enlist, the best advice thaj; can be given here is for them to go to the armory and investigate things for themselves and make their decision on flie basis of their own observations and information. I;Jamcs McCool, writing his column "Wild Life Lines" in Mio Orogouian recently, gave Diamond lake to Jackson county. If Diamond lake had to be moved, it is better that it was taken no farther south than Jackson cotlnty. When Diaftiond and Crater lakes are moved, they are usually taken to (Jjilil'ornia by the versatile writers of that state. McCool can.be excused though, for who would beliove that Diamond lakis in Douglas county when this county has never had enterprise enough to complete a road to it. THE management of the Liberty theatre has announced that there will he no more shows there except on Friday and Saturday un til further notice. With the arrival of the new Western Electric talk ing device at the Antlers about February 1 the -machine now al that theatre will be moved to the Liberty which will thereafter have talking pictures. The new machine at the Antlers v ill be more suit able to the auditorium and the one to he transferred, to" the Liberty will be practical for use there.
