WHAT TIIK COI'NTUY WANTS F OI;fi out of every five iicu'simpcrs in tliu United States are opposed to the llawloy-Smoot tariff bill as passed y the house and stalled in the senate thr.nit.rh the opposition of the independent bloc of senators. This is disclosed by the results of a questionnaire sent to all newspapers by Repre sentative Louis Ludlow of Indiana, lie received replies from I-'IU newspapers, representing every state. Of these :!.r8 expressed opposition to tin; pending bill while but 71 approved it. Here is a quite sufficient reply to the old jfiuird spokesmen who have been hurlinjf anathema upon the op posing senate bloc, for its course!. The opposing bloc has been aetinn in accordance with the country's wishes. The old guard has been opposing those; wishes. The most positive ground tal;cn by the editors for their opposition to the Hawley-Smoot bill is its failure to conform to the recommendations of President Hoover which would have confined its revision to schedules calculated to help agriculture, with limited revision in favor of needy indus tries. There is specific objection to the proposal for a high er sugar duty coming from editors in all stales except the four .sugar producing states, Colorado, Utah, Montana and ' Louisiana. Opinion on the flexible provision of the tariff is closely divided among the editors who discussed it but these num ber only 125 among tin; l:!2 wiio expressed view:; concerning the .bill us a whole, or the 12.r, a total of (':? favored the .sliding scale principle while (V.i were for changes by the tar iff commission and the President. This narrow division adds to the indications already apparent that the flexible provision is likely to become a center of controversy in the present session of congress. Newspapers reflect public opinion correctly. The re . suits of the canvass aiv.or.g the newspapers of the whole country by Representative Ludlow therefore indicate (piile clearly what the country wants in tariff legislation. It wants revision confined within the limitations laid down by Presi dent Hoover in his two messages. A story in this newspaper yesterday told that John Kwell, Douglas county's great booster and sportsman, shot n buck deer out of season. Jt was a shock for those who know John, to read those lines. The story hail a happy ending, however, because the shooting was merciful and had the complete sanction of the game warden. 1 'M J, I'M CLAD " MV MOTHER OVO'T HEAR ! rarr I j I i Ti Ijl f WMvr'"b THi'b?
