A curious thing was happening inside the picture on the Chinese piate. MM. Flor, Hanld. Yam and Knarf the five little shadow chil dren with the odd. turned-about names were chasitt? pie-crust. Yes, chasing pie crust! Neither more nor less! This is what had happened. After the shadows were inside the picture on the plate (being shadows they could get in side a picture, you know) they met Ting-a Ling and Sing-Song, two Chinamen, who promised to bake them a cherry pie. But, though Knarf Insisted that the first thing to he done in bakint; a cherry pie was to pick the cher ries, the Chinamen were of the opinion that the crust was the 1 i-r&h r n-Jri if T (ing-a-Ling s Hat Was hi I led. more important. So they baked the crust, which, being light as a feather, had blown out of the win dow. Down toward the brook it rolled, the two Chinamen and the shadow-children chasing frantically af ter. You can see the brook in any Chinese Plate. It Is a wide, wet brook. Pie crust that falls into it is instantly ruined. That's th reason they were all so excited. It simply had to b captured before it did itself any harm. Fortunateiy. instead of rolling Into the brook, it rolled over the bridge, and they pounced upon It on the other side before it had a chance to roll back. Tine a Lin,' and Sing-Sons breathed a det-p sich of reliff. The crust, 1 hey found, was still unin jured, although a bit chipped here ami there along the edtes. They took good cure as they walked barb not to allow it 10 blow amy again. ' 1 mot. By th-t wMk, 1 M cent. Mall yew aft FDR SALE 150 turkeys. VY Hager, Rt. 2, Creswell, Ore. FOR SALE Live raccoon. "Very good," said his compan ion, rolling his eyes, for he was extremely fond of cherry pie. (Who isn't?) "Hm-m, what's the good of pick ing the cherries now ?" Knarf wanted to know. "How will you be able to get them inside the crust?" Both Tinga-Ling and Sing Sons looked at each other questiouliig ly. But as they couldn't find out anything that way, they looked up Into the cherry tree, which they had just reached. The tree was full of robins, who were feasting on the cherries. However, there were enough left for the pie. "We'll decide that point after we pick them," Sing-Song said. Then he climbed up the tree and threw down cherries until Tln;-a-Ling's hat was filled. Then u on they all returned to Tlng-a-Lln.j's home. "Now we'll liave cherry pie!" said Tinga-Ling after the ar rived. First he shut all the win dows to prevent the crust from flying off. Then he carefully washed the cherries and set them In a plate next to the crust. Then they tried to figure out hew to get the cherries inside the pie without breaking the crust, for what sort of pie can you have if the crust Is broken? "Maybe you can get them In through fork holes on the top," Yam suggested. The fork holes were put in to allow the steam to escape when the crust was baking. They were found much too umall. The cherries simply wouldn't al low themselves to be squeezed through. "Maybe they can be gotten in through the back," said Ml p. But there was no place there at all. "Maybe " said. Hanid and Flor. Then they stopped. "Maybe " said Ting-a-LIng and Kin-Song. Then they slopped, too. The, rubbed the tops of their heads. They gazed at the ceiling. They even looked in the diction ary. But nowhere could they find a word of sensible advice on how to get cherries Into a cherry pie after the crust was baked. All at once Knarf uttered an ex clamation. "Why not." he said, "why not eat ihe crust and the cherries together? That wdl Ik Jum the same as though they were made together." At first tliev could hardlv be lieve their ears. It sounded too' good to be true. Then they all shouted "Hotirah!" And, falling on crust and cherries together, soon finished both. And that is how Knarf saved the day. (Copri.ht.
