Nathalie, In desperation, cashes a check lor y.UMi al tin- Waldoif bo ld, where her family name Is mill accepted as (lie symbol of untold millions. Sloan, unknown lo Nnlh.i lie, makes good Hits false cheek. On a second trip to Southampton, Nathalie Is startled when a strange Bwarlhy man calls for iter. l-earing Ihe police, she flees die houf.e. After boarding a train site leaves It hastily al a small station when she learns Ihe mysterious man is aboard. Chiding herself in 1 trunk villc, she vislls Tread well I'omnl, hank president, who holds the mortage on "The Kirs". Pound secretly desires the estate, know ing the new stale road will en hance. Its value considerably. He proposes that she act us host ess to a rich Smith American who wishes to lake over "The Kirs" ttndentertain his wealthy friend. In need of money, Nathalie agrees on one condition, that her Identity must be hidden by a mask r!.at ulie will wear. Alter telephoning, Pound tells hii die condit Ion is accepted. She I hen calls John Sloan. Al dinner with Sloan, who Is fast falling In love with the beaul Kul Nathalie, she hi forms him of the f trance posit ion she will take. He doea not mention the. check. HOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTK.lt X. Sloan's eyes had begun to .'-litter, "(ireat I " he explained. "I begin lo llilnk you're going to go over big. Now. next thing, I in your lawyer and so its In order for me lo he beside you tomorrow it 1 lit w hen you meet your m s tej lous emploxer tenant at the gar den :ate. I Insist, in fact, on go ing." "And 1 want jou lo." Nathalie agreeil at once. "Thai is particu larly w hat I came here to ask. Without you I think I'd he the least hit afraid." "Fine," said Sloan, ami I hey fell Into a dlsetissioii of details. Tbe arranged thai she should devoie the next day to her .shopping and that in the late atternoon 1 hey drixe to her country place in his runabout and altt-r inspecting il dine at an inn and ieinrn to The Kirs by nine al night. "And III the meuiiliiuc." said Sloan, as the w alter brought the bill, "unless ymi have made Home other arrangement for the night, I would like lo Ml-gest Dial you spend it with a married sisler of mine who lives here in town. I I have Hpoken to her ami I think you will like her--" "I know I will." Nathalie an s ered Instantly and blushed crimson aa she added: "If slie'n eve.n the bast like you." In Ihe middle of ihe following afternoon Sloan sat smoking in his roadster vltich he had parked at a curb on Kitih Avenue near the Plaza entrance to Central pin k. He had arrived rifteen minutes in advance of the lime at which he had agreed to meet Nathalie and was staring Idly at Ihe procession of well turned out people who al ways rill the avenue on bright af ternoons in early autumn. Some were middle aged, some were young, ti fi-w were sedate, a num ber of the young women were viv id. A girl of a distinct Ijitin type cau-jht his eye. She wore a mod ish suit of dark orange and ex treme high heHs and among the many nun-tanned and elenr sktnned girls about her she wan oulslanding for ihe pallor of her dead while complexion. Her hail', jei black and in soil waves over her ears, was surmounied by a small black hat with a Kiilneslone danger thrust through It. Her lip were deeply rouged and her dark eyes brooding and faintly Insolent. ".lealous type," thought Sloan; then stared blankly as-she slopped hcslde his car and spoke lo him. "Do you think it will do? she n;ked. Her accent was faintly for eign, her fcomhre eyes expression less. "Do I think what will do?" Sloan, bewildered, asked In tin n "I'm afraid I don't .fully understand you." "Do you think Nathalie Van Slaick as a Spanish senorita will do?" pumued the girl, "(io over big, as you isaid lasi night? You're taking her to dinner, aren't you'.'" "I'll say I am," gasped Sloan an be sprang out and helped her into the car. "My Jove, and he gazed at her In admiral ion. " on took mi' like Craut took Uichimmd. MO pn lor If tthllr toii tree ilrniotitrntiun dropped her prclending after they were over the bridge and ou Long Island and began lo lalk animated ly of Ihe purchasing she had done dining the day. "I had to do It skillfully for money goe wueh a very little way in New York. Hut by searching in shop after tdmp I managed lo pick up an Inexpensive dress or two that will do exactly. After I have earned some money I will add to what I have. My maKk I have aloiK and will put it on just le'fore I meet my mysterious em ployer tonight." "And 1 have a chauffeur's cap and uniform Jacket in the back of 1 he car," supplemented Sloan. "They'll do for my disgulne If I keep in the dark. And Willi u liver ied chauffeur driving you can auk for more money." Milt the excellelil splrlls they were In were lowered when, at the end of tht afternoon, they drew up at Ihe gate of The KIib and en tered lta neglected ground: on foot. The place had been n handsome estate once will) Its great ram bling house and ample stables. II had had a school for training hunt ers ami a polo field In Its prime, but this was now overgrown and opllteratcd. The porches of ihe house sagged, shutters hung by one hinge here and there. The roof tree of one of the diables had fall-! en In and nearly till of the once smartly kept fencing had rotted and fallen, lis name. The Kirs, had been given It from the shield of Scotch fir trees which originally hail been plaulcd lo the north or it as a barrier against winter;. Hut later firs, self sown from the seed pods of (he original ones, had grown up through Ihe years of the estate's neglect till Ihe house now stood almost enveloped by them. Front the rarely used road which led past Ihe place one had to look sharply lo determine that there was a house at all. "I wonder," said Sloan, "what your prospective employer wants lo live here for or. as 4 hey say on Itroadway, "vhat Ihe racket Is. I think t il stick a hit close when he lalks to you tonight." "I wonder myself," agreed Nathalie, "all hough the explana tion Mr. Pound gave was simple enough, lie bald the man who has taken Ihe place Is a well-know n sporlsniHii from outside of Long Island who will bring a string of hunters here and wanted the house because it was large and he hud a lot of entertaining to do by way of paying otf his nodal debts to Long Island people who bad been hospitable to him. The stables, Pound said, ou account of (heir sie, had had a lot to do with hii wish to rent the place." "Of con rKe he isn't married," put In Sloan. "Certainly not," replied Natha lie, "lie would nut require a host ess if he were." "Kspecially a masked one," urged Sloan. "That is singular on both sides, isn't it?" agreed Nathalie. "But till we see him let's suspend judg ment. If 1 don't like him or you don't like him there won't be any bargain. Somehow, though, I feel that Km going to take his offer." They drove to an inn two miles away and had dinner there and by half past eight were back at The Kirs. While they waited Nathalie produced her half mask from her bag and put it on and Sloan, go ing to the back of his car, re turned to her Bide presently wear ing his chauffeur's cap and jacket. "And 1 have a revolver where I can reach It quickly, too," he told her. "I don't expect f shall need it but It should cheer you to know i have it. "Ami I have this to say, further more," he added, as he produced his cigarette case and his hand shook slightly as he struck a mulch. "Vou may as well know it I'm In love with you. Perma nently in love with you there will never be anybody else. I don't ask you to make any answer to that at a moment like this you're hard ly yourself and it wouldn't be fair. But keep it in mind, please, and if ever " He stopped as the twin lights of a motor car appeared far down the road. "Here's our man, 1 think," he said. "Now, then, be fore he arrives can you think of any well-known sportsman from oulside of Long Island who bus been enlertaiued by Long Island people and has so far remained mummied?" Nathalie only half heard him. Hut the part of her mind which was not whirling with the avowal or love he had Just made turned hack Ihe pages of recent memory ami she said a little mechanically: "The only one I can think of Is Ciiplain Uamnn Stefauo, the fain on? Argentine polo star. I met him at dinner at Aunt Olivia's the eve ning of the first day you and I met." The car which had been coming toward them was close up now and stopped in the full glare of their headlights. A man In evening clothes under a light overcoat emerged from it. It was Captain Itamon Stefano. (To be continued.) (Copyright, 11)21), King Feature. Syndicate, Inc.) MITICK TO t ltl UlTOltS OT!( K Ol-1 I'INAI.
