shadow-children with the turned
n bout names were walking in the
fields when they heard a great
buzziiiR noise close by.
"Wale out, watch out-" came a
voice at their feet. "Don't step on
me. I'm very important."
They looked down and saw a
large beetle. It was beautifully

"Humph." retorted Hie beetle,

Nobody studies shadows, you
know."
"Docs anyone study beetles ?'

"You don't understand. They
do not study me exactly. They
study beetles that are just like
me."-

beetles just like you, Flor re
minded it.
"My, my, you children simply
won't understand. There aren't
any just like me but the pioies-
sors know about me just the same
and are studying me as hard as
they can."
"Why Is that?" asked Knnrf.
"Because I'm so important. Do
you know that long ago in the
time of the Egyptians, the mem
bers or our family were so highly
thought of that we were used as
charms. They called us scarabs.
Even today you will find rings
and bracelets and necklaces on

her. "I'm probably the most Im

er off as quickly as I can. when
ever I hear someone approach."
"Perhaps," said Hanid, "some

find you because you always
scamper off.
Apparently this had never oc
curred to the beetle before, for it
suddenly became very thoughtful.
"H-m." it satd at length, "that may
bo. I'll remember that next time."
Just then there was s sound of

see a tall, thin man, with spect
acles drawing near,
"It's the Professor!" rrief Flor.

as he examined it. "This is

And with that he put It In a 1ft
tie box and. placing the box In his
poeket. walked off with it.

ed in the stone, containing the
names of the county and slate ex
ecutives, the name of President
Hoover, the names of city officers,
a speeial edition of the News lie

directory, copy of tho grange cere
monial, program of tho dedication
ceremony, and a chamber of com
merce booklet.
Two bands, one from Sutherlin
and the other the Roseburg Muni
cipal band, participated In the
event, and played concerts afler
the conclusion of the afternoon pro
eram, which included addresses by
Governor Patterson and Circuit
Judge J W. Hamilton. The thea
tres were cro wiled for the special
matinee performances, while there
was also a big crowd at the football
game.
In the evening a very Interesting
program of stunts wns given on
Douglas street in front of the
courthouse building. Floodlights
were placed ut each end of the
block to afford Illumination, and
red flares were also used.
The program concluded with a
dunce In the evening.
