"Now see here," Mr. Canary1 be
gan, after they had settled down
ou the long perch again, "you can
all learn to sing In rive minutes if
you only do exactly a;; 1 do. Just
watch me carefully." He opened
his mouth a little and Instantly be
gan to sing. It was the sweetest
song Imaginable, full of chirrups
and warbles and long trills. It
looked so easy that the shadow-
children gazed at each other in
surprise.
It looks as easy as pie," MIJ
said.
It's much easier than pie," Mr.
Canary said. Then he turned to
the young birds: "Now then,
sing!"
They opened their moutns. in
stead of singing, they Just peeped.
Where were the chirrups, the war
bles and the trills? Mr. Canary
glared at them.
"Is that singing?" he cried, "is
that the way you attend to my les
sons? Are you canaries or spar
rows? Why do you PEEP?"
Tho little canries could only
shuffle ahout in the most pltifu
discomfort. They would have hid

had there only been room enough.
Angrier and angrier grew Mr. Can

children can sine!"
The shadow-children shook their
heads nil except Knarf, who smil
ed proudly.
"Certainly we can sing, he cild.
"We don't just peep like you ! "
"Of course not," Mr. Canary re
marked. "You sing very well,
don't you?"
"Oh yen, very well."
"That's nopftune you've hi ways
attended to your singing lessons."
Knarf nodded although he had
never taken a singing lesson In

ROSEBURG TO BE
HOST TO COUNTY
AT CELEBRATION
(Continued from page 1)
success of tne event will depend
on whether or not enough of a fund
can be raised to carry It off prop
erly. "If only 75 business places in
Roseburg giva $10.00 each the goal
will be reached," Chairman Hawn
said, "and surely there will be
more than that." The event Is one
of utmost Importance aud it Is ex
pt-ctrd that the entire city will get
behind It.
Name for Event Needed
In order to properly advertise
the event a proper name-slogan
was deemed necessary aud It was
the opinion of all members of the
committee that a short contest
should be conducted. It was point
ed out that such a name should be
short and catchy and describe the
event. Roseburg clttsens arp invlt
