If the prunes that we ship this year are of fine quality and nicely packed, a wonderful impression will be created that will lead to ex panded markets for our prunes. For this reason then, ex tra care and attention should be given to the prune harvest "and its handling so that the prunes shipped from this county this year will be so acceptable to a trade not used to Douglas county prunes that this trade will demand Douglas county prunes in the future. Furthermore, if it is at all possible, the fact that the prunes were grown in the Umpqua valley should bo printed in some manner on the boxes and pack ages of prunes. If it is not possible this year to have the Umpqua brand on the prunes shipped, now is a good time to begin plans that will lead to the establishment of an Ump quft valley trade-mark or brand that can be placed on all products shipped from this valley. Consumers of food pro ducts can be educated to demand a prouuet that they have found to be excellent and superior to others. The movement of Russian troops over the Chinese border may turn out to be just one more incident in the long chain of disorder which besets the Celestial empire or, conceivably, it can be the starting point for more trouble than you would care to think about. Probably it will be the former. The world powers .undoubtedly, will use every ef fort to localize the rumpus. But it could very easily mean a large sized war. Suppose, for instance, that the Japanese felt that this Russian invasion were menacing their inter ests, and should send their own army up to meet it? And suppose that this should create a situation in which some such power as England should feel called oh to take a hand? And with all this-going on, it is quite-easy to see how the United States could get involved, what with our "open door policy" and our interests in China and the Orient generally. Probably it won't happen that way but it's worth watch ing. A whole lot of trouble could very easily begin in just that way. They have been warned year af.er year, but the illegal practice goes on unabated. Relief from the fish and game commissions appears improbable. Although the former commission Is charged with affording protection to commercial fish and tho latter with enforcing the laws protecting game fish, such as the steelhead, there is only one warden to patrol the 30-mile stretch of river from the mouth up. It appears, therefore, that the only alternative of those who are dealiious of having tho laws regu lating fishing in Rogue river Is to secure the enactment of a law which will prohfbit commercial fishing ia Its entirety. Those who persist in poaching on Rogue river havo doubtless for gotten that advocates of a closed stream missed snly a narrow mar gin securing the enactment of a law outlawing commercial fishing at the last session of the legisla ture. They ought to be able to see the handwriting on the wall and realize that unless they' quit the practice of catching commercial fish outside boundary limits and In catching ateelheads for commercial purposes that a law will, eventually bo passed closing the stream to commercial fishing for all time. There is no doubt but that il legal fishing is contributing large ly to the rapid depletion of fish In Rogue river, and sportsmen are de termined to stop it by reBorting to the one remaining alternative. The cause of the explosion could not be-immediately learned by Inves'i gatots from the war department. Fire reports said that at least eighteen soldiers had been killed and ten wounded and that the pres ence of a large number of work men In the building would probab ly swell the casualty list. The minister of war subsequent ly denied, however, that there had been any casualties and described the material damage as limited to destruction of a few railway cars ami a magazine. The populace of the region was panic stricken by the sound of the explosion. A fine of S2.50 was paid in the city court yesterday by Douglas Stark, who entered a plea of guilty to Minnlng by a stop Bign. Dry Weather EDWARDS CANNOT FARTICIPATE IN ORATORY CONTEST C. A. Edwards, local pastor and member of the Roseburg Kiwants club, who was to have represented the Roseburg club in the speaking contest at the district convention now being held in Salem, was un able io attend the Salem meeting because of a severe cold. The Rose burg club has been looking for ward eagerly to this contest, as Rev. Edwards Is considered one of the leading orators of the distrlet and it had been hoped to bWng the trophy to this city, but Saturday night the local minister was at tacked by a cold which handi capped him greatly in his Sunday moaning sermon and prevented htm from speaking Sunday nkht as p'anned.
