UNDER QUARANTINE
SAN FRANCISCO. Aug. 7. Willi
all clant beds on the shores of
Marin and Sonoma counties under
a strict quarantine ordered by Dr
Walter M. Dickie, director of the
state department of public health.
Indications w ere today that five San
Francisco residents stricken alter
eating toxic clams, would recover.
Four other persons have died with
in the last week after eating clams
or mussels gathered off the north
ern California coast.
While an outbreak of mussel
poisoning occurred in Julv. I!ii!7,
ihls year was the first in which
cases of clam poisoning have been
observed by the slate board of
health, :iiil Dr. Dickie today, in
making public results of research
work 011 causes of the poison.
Efforts to determine the exact
cause of ihe poison, which in l!'L'7 1
afflicted in;; persons anil killed six,!
have not yet culminated in a defi
nite diagnoj is. Dickie said, but thei
research work done by the depart
ment during Die at two years in
d hated the polMu Is a result ot an
organic chanta Influenced by fluid
and spawning conditions of the
mussel. I
A very recent and incomplete re- !
search, Dr. Dickie said, tended to
show the same condition in lite
ciatii cansed poisoning which might ,
a M'ect humans.
The department lias definite!
determined that the oion is 1101
the result of bacteria, crtppei salts,
parasites .stagnant poolr or expo
