The highway commission has urged (bat a fill be put in for the approaches,- in stead of regular trestle work .SpiiiiKHeld citizens objected to this plan, declaring It would cause floods during high water. No pro gress has been made in a year's discussion of the problem, and In the meantime a needed bridge has been useless. Now, the county court of Lane county has offered a compromise, (t was understood today that this compromise would be accepted. The new plan calls for a shorter fill than first proposed, and an ex tended approach. . The drive for the Waltula cut- o'f got under way again at today's meeting. A delegation from Uma tilla, reinforced by Portland repre sentatives, urged that this much discussed cutoff be put oq the Oregon road program. ri his short cut would lessen the automobile route between Walla Walla and the Old Oregon Trail by many miles. Although U has been urged by the federal road de partment, the itute highway com mission has opposed it. The question was first raised some six or seven years ago when Commissioner Barrett of Heppner objected. His objection was never shaken. It was reported here to day that the federal roal depart ment will ffee to it that If one state builds this cutofr to the line, the other state will do so or be denied federal aid on other projects. While it has not been officially so stated, it Is understood that the government has long been eager for the connecting link between main Oregon and Washington high ways.
