KUtfl .1929 NCA SERVICE INC She wanted to act as If nolhlng stood between them, to give her usual warm, eager assistance, but Iris was between them now: there was no possible blinking of that fact. Until Morgan hlmse'f ban ished her . . . Hut Nan forced her self to add. as cheerfully as pos sible: "I'll he glad to help. If you want to bring the records home." She felt that Morgan's eyes, still fixed upon the telegram, were de liberately avoiding hers. His flush deepened. "I don't think that will be necessary. Nan. You'll have your hands full with the hoy. . . . What time are we to have din ner?" "It was planned for two, so that Curtis might safely eat as much as he pleased, but now that he's ill, 1 can set the hour ahead lo six. If you like." Her jealous eyes told her that he was relieved. "Kim?! That will give me several hours of good, hard work. or course, if Curtis is worse, or calls for me, I'll cut the work short and hurry home." "I shan't telephone unless you're really needed." Nan promised. If he wauled the assurnnce (hat he would have time lo slip In a Christ mas hay visit with Iris, let him have It. She had always done ev erytbine In her power to make him happy. Whyistop now? When her husband was gone. Nan wandered into the drawing room where the neglected Christ mas tree still offered all Its treas ures. Morgan, obviously, had for gotten the tree. The seals were unbroken on the packages which contained hers and Curtis' gifts for him. ; Her steps made very slow by the weariness of despair. Nan walked about the tree, untying the gold and silver cord which bound the tissue-wrapped parcels tnsged with her stepson's name. They made qulln a formidable little pile, ex clusive of the big toy automobile anil the well-stocked tool chest. "For Curtis from Kslelle"; "For Curtis from Little l'al": "For Cur tis from Maude ami Hlg Pat"; "For Curtis from his Father". High up on the tree, just below the big sil ver Star of Hethlehem, Nan found a parcel she had not. seen before. This time her inlulllon did not play her false. Tho card, which bore a highly colored picture of the Madonna Child, was Inscribed: "For my little lover, from his ador ing Mother". "John slipped down here last night after 1 was asleep and put It there." Nan told herself with the curious detachment of despair. Without being conscious of any curlousity as lo what the small box contained, Nan added It to the pile of gifts she would carry up stairs lo the sick child. Then she walked slowly about tho tree aualn, her eyes dully taking In her own name, written on half a dozen tags. A gift from each of the ser vants, even from Little I'at. Sweet of them, dear of them to spend their money on her. Hut Nan felt no uplifting of the heart. What would it avail her If she gained the love of ihe whole world and lost that of the out! man she could eer love? She hail resolutely Ignored the paekauc which she knew contained his gift to her. She did mil hav Ihe courage lo look at the tag. If his pillows, looking suddenly tired: it said merely. "For Nan. from John," she could not bear it. IJet-j ter uncertainty than that. . . . "Am 1 losintr my nerve complete ly?" Nan whipped up anger and disgust against herself. 'Txiok at It. you idiot! Hetter to know the worst than to kid yourself." With a quick, resolute jeik she tore Ihe package from a branch of the gaily decked tree, wounding ft, so that the pungent odor of Its tears filled her nostrils. She watched the pine needles sift to the floor, then forced her eyes to read the card. "Oh!" she cried. The card was inscribed, in Ihe handwriting she knew and loved so well: "For my dear wife, from John." With gentle fingers, which must have soothed the hurt feelings of the little fir tree. Nan retied the parrel, still unopened. She and John would open their gifts to gether when he came back. Christ mas was a heavenly time, after all. (lathering Curtis gifts Into her arms. Nan. ran from the room, up the stairs. Just before reaching the child's door, her clear, un trained but true voice lifted in joy ous song: "It came upon the midnight clear. That glorious song of old " As she onened the door, still caroling softly, an Insistent query nushed lis wav through her exulta tion: "I wonder how he addressed Iris gift 'For my former wife, from Jack'?" How she had hated to hear, Iris call him Mack." niflk Ine him small and trivial hv the sininle device of using a nickname which was a gross misfit! Then shame and contrition flooded Nan's hear!, for the words her Hps were singing were: "Peace on the earth, Cood will to men From Heaven's all-graclons King." "That's a Christmas carol." Cur tis called weakly from his bed. "We learned two Christmas carols to sing at school last Frldav. Can vou sing 'Little Town of Hethle hem.' Nan? Can you? I can!" "Of course I can! Put look .who I am! Santa Clans! And there are some big presents downstairs for yon as soon as you r well enough to nlay with them." Nan answered. The next hour was almost pure hapnlness, heightened. Nan was half-ashemed later to realize, by the casual wav In which Curtis In spected and laid aside the ex quisite miniature of herself which Iris had sent to her son. In later years he might undoubtedly would treasure it, take It with him everywhere, build untrue, poetic legends about the woman whose beauty 11 immortalized: but now he wis only a greedy, fever ish little hov. tearing open pack- aces to find treiivnre more suited to h's tastes. Poor Iris! Nan forced herself to say, but Immedi ately came the strong suspicion that the miniature had been really Intended for the father, not the son. "Wouldn't you like to write a note to your mother at the hospi tal and thank her for her gift?" Nan suggested. In her new nappl ifess. she could afford to he gener ous, had an urgent need to he generous toward that oilier woman who, It seemed, was to he van qnished. "For my dear wife " her heart sang, over and over. "Hunh? At the hospital?" Curtis repeated, with childish scorn for Nan a Ignorance. "She nin t mean. Isn't at the hospital any more. She went to the Wellington Arms yesterday. Father and I took her. She's got a swell room. 'At's a hotel. Why don't they say Well ington Hotel, Nan? Nan was sorely tempted lo all the office, tl would make her more happy to be absolutely sure that he was there, working on the Hradley case. Hut each time she refrained. Was she degenerating into one of those jealous, suspi cious wives who can't trust tjieir husbands out of their sight, who resort to low tricks to catch them In Jies and deceit ? At five Hr. Iliac k came. When he had completed his examination of the sick child, he drew . Nan with him out into the hall. As the door closed his jovial grin faded instantly, and was replaced by a grave frown. "Is it anything serious, doctor?" Nan asked in a terrified whisper, as ihey descended the stairs. The doctor did not answer until they reached the front hall. "I can't be sure. Children are pesky natlents. Scare you to death one day, and provoke you into spank ing them the next by their hleh spirits. To be frank. Nan, It looks a little like appendicitis. . . . Hey. hold onto yourself, girl! Nothing to hit the celling about if It is. And it may not be. of course, or. at worst, a very mild attack which may never be rcoeated. if you waich his diet. . . . That woman! That wo man!" he added savagely. "I have been very careful, Dr. Black." Nan said bleakly. Not for her to utter accusations against the boy'B mother. "Don't I know that?" Dr. Tllack blustered. "Helleve me, T gave Iris Morgan a piece of my mind today." "You saw her? Nan cried. "Hut Curtis told me she had left the hospital " "Hlght! He telephoned her at the Wellington Arms that Curtis was not able to go out and that, of course, he couldn't see her, either. John's no fool. Nan. He's not entirely su perior to convention.
