L W -Tee-r V- CGOOD-MCHT STORIES By Max Trell "THE PIGEON COULD BE EATING STILL, IF ONLY IT HAD A SOFTta BILL" MiJ, Flor. Hanid. Yam and Ktntif the utile shadow children were at the park wilh their mas ters and mistresses. They e.e walking rt- iu in front of the little veal children. U w.-.sn't because lucy waiki-u L,: ut l.ian the real cinldreii. oil, no, not at all. It was in re.y that the su:i was shining iu l:n k of the real-children and the shadows, who dreaded the sun, put themselves in front of them lo shietd themselves from Its rays. "Where are we going?" asked Yum. "We're going to the lake," said Ilaaid. "The lake'd the other way." put iu Flor. "We're going to see the animals." "Of course we are," aded Mij, who being Flor's twin, always found it easy to agree with him. "I don't like any of the pluces we're going lo," Knarf announced. ' Tin going down this patli Into the woods." Just as he said this the children turned down the other way and Master Knarf had to run along, de spite his unwillingness. "Oh!" ex claimed Yam, "I thought you were going to tho woods." "I changed my mind," he retort ed. "Are they fresh?" asked the Pigeon "Look nt the pigeons!" exclaim ed the shadows. The pigeons scur ried out of the children's way, then turned to watch them, hungrily. The children stopped, too, and lit tle Frank, who was Knarf's master, held out his hand with bread rn:mbs. The pigeons glanced at it suspiciously. "Why don't you go up to bis hand?" urged the shadows. "Breadcrumbs are very nice," s;d() Hamitl. "It's a trick to catch me," said the pigeon, who knew only too well the habits of some little boys. "Oh, no, my master would never do that!" .exclaimed. Knarf, indig nantly. At this the pigeon stepped a bit closer to Frank's hand. "Are i hey fresh breadcrumbs?" usl;ed the pigeon. "Very fresh," answered Knarf, although he didn't know. "They were just baked this morning." "I think I'll try a crumb," said the pigeon. "You're sure it's no trick?" Knarf nodded vigorously. With that the pigeon drew cau tiously up to Frank's hand, peered at the crumbs first with one eye und then with the other and ut length gave a quick peek. Its bill was sharp, however, and Utile Frank uttered ft sharp cry, which so frightened tho pigeon that it flew off at once. The crumbs scat tered till over the ground and the sparrows ate them while the pigeon looked on enviously. "That's what, you get for having such a hard bill," cried Knarf. "You could be eating still," said Flor. "if only you hud a soft bill," said Mij. Copyright. 1!i2!l, Newspaper Fea I ure Servh o. Inc.
