Roseburg Withdraws Its Bid
for Event Sponsored by
County Breeder's
Association.
Letter States That Other
Communities Entitled to
Consideration in
Such Projects. '
Boaeburg has waived Its claim
for the first annual turkey show-
to be staged by the DoukIiis Coun
ty Turkey Ilreedera association,
and the event will be nresented at
Oakland some time in December
or January. Both Roseburg and
Oakland presented bids for this
fair and the matter was submitted
to the directors of the association
for a vote on the site, but before
the vote was taken the Roseburg
Chamber of Commerce decided to
withdraw and allow the first show
to be held in Oakland.
In a-letter to County Agent J.
C. Leedy the Roseburg Chamber
of Commerce stated that "It is our
Intent and will be our constant ef
fort to have the Roseburg Chamber
of Commerce -represent not only
Roseburg but also every part of
the Umpqua valley. We realize
fully that other sections of this
county are entitled to considera
tion and what furthers the interest
of one town very naturally helps
every single district. We feel that
the poultry business in its various
ramifications should be made the
major industry of this entire val
ley. At any rate we are going on
this assumption and are planning
to this end.
"Will you please promise in the
name of the Chamber of Commerce
our most hearty cooperation with
all turkey growers of the Umpqua
valley in this movement, as we
see it is the beginning of a big
thing. Also please express to Oak
land our promise to be of help to
them In making this a pronoiihc.ed
success; and 'let them feel at liber
ty to call upon this organization at
any and all times for the help that
Is wiMiin our power to give them.
The letter of withdrawal, to
gether with the statement from the
local Chamber of Commerce, was
mailed to each of the directors be
fore the ballots were cast, so that
the election resulted in a unani
mous choice for Oakland.
The Roseburg Chamber of Com
merce, however, decalred that by
withdrawing the bid for this year's
fair, it did not desire to establish
a precedent, for Roseburg will be
ready to present the fair at any
time, and will perhaps seek it in
the fin lire, but as Oakland desires
to stage tne event this year and as
turkey raising Is one of the im
portant Industries in that locality,
the local Chamber was willing that
the first fair be held at that place
without competition from Rose
burg.
The turkey breeders are plan
ning on a large fair at which
choice birds will be displayed in
an effort to stimulate the industry
and to bring about a greater inter
est in high quality birds and to de
velop a new industry In the way
of establishing a market for fine
breeding birds, which offer a good
opportunity for profit to the turkey
growers, as the fancy birds bring
a high price. -

today' showed.
The mayor-elect, who rose to lo
cal fame as a member of the 1928
"clean up" grand Jury, polled 151.
710 votes to J0G.511 for his oppon
ent. Even more one-sided was the
race for the office of city attorney,
with Edwin P. Werner polling 152.
173 votes against 82,463 for Pierson
M. Hall.
SENATOR FESS' SON IS
TARGET FOR BULLETS
HAMILTON, Ohio, June 5. Mis
taken identity was accepted todny

here last night to shoot C. Sumner
Fess, of New York, son of Senator
Simeon D. Fess, who wns fired up
on as he drove from Mlddletown
to Hamilton. Fess was unhurt.

might have been mistaken for that

Sherlock Holmes of tomorrow will
not be a detective solving bnffling
mysteries by his own cleverness,
but a scientific export relying up
on standardization methods of pre
cise identification.
This prediction was made by Wfl
mer Souder of the bureau of stand
ards, in placing before the national
conference of weights and meas
ures the bureau's work with the
problems of Identification. j
The cunning criminal, who masks1
his face and gloves his hands, the!
expert showed, will find himself!
pitted against the cold scrutiny of j
super-microscopes that will tear I
his identity from a type-written
document, a pistol ball, a cartridge
shell, or a signature.
Experts who make Identifications I
In a logical, precise manner will
replace "the so-called experts who!
recoRiiize no limitations, no stand
ards, and no enuinment as essen
tial in their field," Mr. Souder said.
In an effort to establish stand

tion of Clarence Frick, under arrest
at Medford, was authorized by the
office of Governor Patterson yes
terday on a requisition from Cali
fornia. He Is wanted for a statutory
offense alleged to have been com
mitted at Stockton.
STATE CHAMBER
The steady stream of new people
Into Oregon Is revealed by the
May report of the State Chamber
of Commerce which shows 75 new
families who located In alt sections
of the state. These new people
purchased 4154 acres of land and
invested a total of $260,900 in
property. During the month the
state chamber received letters
from 89 families who stated they
had received Oregon literature and
had decided to come to this state
and locate. These prospective fami
lies will have $204,700 to Invest.
Other interesting figures of the
May report are: 1486 letters were
received from people interested In
Oregon: 103 families signed the
chamber's questionnaire giving
facts about whatthey were seeking
In Oregon; 5429 letters were
mailed to prospective families and
2S65 pieces of Oregon literature
were mailed: 352 people called at
the Portland office.

In 2 minutes when he hoisted
Kruse in the nir. threw him over
his shoulder and smashed him to

In the preliminary Kay Jeffries,

REPORTED BLAZE
ON VESSEL HOAX

LONDON, June 6. A dispatch
to the Exchange Telegraph com
pany from Tokyo today said the
Japanese steamer I'go Maru had
arrived at Kamchatka, Siberia.
Authorities were said to be In
vestigating previous reports the
vessel had burned and its crew of
43 and 700 passengers lost.
The ship was tinner charter by
the soviet fish trust and was hound
for Kamchatka from Vladivostok.
Soviet authorities In denying the
mishap charged the reports were
spread to make it difficult' to re
cruit other fishing- crews.
