May 28, by a combined program of iu graduating clana exercisea and the commencement address, with pre sentation of certificates, etc. The school chapel was simply and V tastefully adorned, mainly with seasonal flowers. The graduates wore as follows: Tenth grade: Virgil Francis Han sou, president; Ivan Eugene Holm, Lottie Carson and Nellie Baldwin of Sutherlin and Treasa Hash of Roseburg. .Eughth grade: Pauline Luchterhand of Oakland and Ice land Paddock and N. Alverne .Holm of Sutherlin. All had parts in he class prosram except Miss Car son and N. A. Holm. The president of Southern Ore gon Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, Eider T. U. Wok t brook, of Eugene, gave the graduation ad dress which was vevy compre hensive, on the subject of educa tion and what It Is and means. True education, ho said, is the gospel of good news to the world. The greatust leading minds have been educated as Moses In the law age, Daniel of the prophetic period and Paul in the Christian asc None, aside from the great teacher Jesus have heen greater. There Is, it was emphasized, the greatest necessity for a three-fold physical, mental and spiritual education in order to best, meet the require ments for good, loyal citizenship in this world and a preparation for the better and eternal world to come. 1 Mrs. Westbrook, after some ex f cellent remarks on educational work, as head of the church school presented the well-earned certifi cates. Th special music Included an opening inarch by Harold Sandu rik, "The Princess of India," given by a five-piece orcnestra; girls' chorus, "List the Cherub Host," and other selections. Mrs. K. R. Chaiuberlin and Gilbert Wood of Roseburg assisted with the music. H. E. Goffar, the Intermediate teacher, pronounced the benedic tion in conclusion. Prof. Rliinesmir.li sang a beautiful solo, "Not Understood," and Misses Ihea and Opal O Dell Bang a beau tiful duet, "It Takes the Storm clouds to Make the Rainbow." Dr. Docou, heart of the mathematics department az the University of Oregon gave the address of the evening, hav'ng ns his topic, "World Peace." which was very in teresting, lis ell as instructive Mr. Georgo Wilson, chairman of the school board, presented the diplo ins. The orchestra played a num ber as the flowers were presented to the graduates. , On Tuesdny evening the seniors held their class night program. The entire program was given In a meter similar to Hiawatha. It was beautiful, and showed lots of hard work. The entire graduation class took part. David Carpenter play ed a beautiful violin solo, which also was greatly appreciated. Miss Dora Mc Callister, were here on Tuesday last for a brief visit with former friends and to decorate the graves of their parents in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. Mrs. Etta Taylor and son, Wyatt Taylor, were here a couple of days during the week, rrom Marshfleld, to visit former friends and to be present at the Decoration day ex ercises. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Butler of the I.ons Prairie vicinity, were here on Decoration day to witness the exercises of the day and to visit their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Monson. Mrs, Harry Black and two young sons, Robert and Burton, arrived here Thursday evening from ,Hood River to visit with the former's mother, Mrs. Anna Drain, and oth er relatives for a few weeks. The Blacks are moving from Hood River to Seattle, Mr. Black being In the employ of a fruit packing concern, the headquarters of which is located at the latter city. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kent were here during the week to visit with friends and relatives In tUelr home town and to be present at Decora tion day exercises. - Mr. and Mrs. J. M. I .sham and daughter, Mrs. Hay Turner (Arda Isham) and little daughter of Grants Pass, visited here from Wednesday evening to Friday morning, with Mrs. I sham's sisters, Mrs. Anna Drain and Mrs. Ira Wim berry, and their families. Lester Wlmbeiiy of Eugene came up Wednesday evening and spent Thursday with relatives and friends at Roseburg. The la dies of the Oak Grove sewing club met fith Mrs. J. P. Star Wednesday for an all day Bession. A most de licious dinner was served at noon, by Mrs. Star and helpers. The day was spent sewing. Members pres ent were Mrs. Frank Gorrell, Mrs. Cleve Miller, Mrs. Earl Johnson, Mrs. George Wilcox, Mrs. James Leatherwood, Mrs. Fay Leather wood, Mrs. H. F. Secord, Mrs. H. L. Artie Smith, local ferryman, is much pleased with his new scow, built by Algle Dewar of East Gardi ner. Mr. Smith will be able to handle six cars on this new scow, on w hich he figures he will be able to handle the congested traffic tor the summer. Many fishermen throughout the country are taking advantage of the good fishing at the lakes, and have been passing Ihiough Gardi ner In their cars eproute there. Paul Hel weg, cashier at the First State bank, left Saturday for his home at Minneapolis, Minn. He is to marry Miss Shirley Callendar June I. Mr. and Mrs. Holweg will return to Sutherlin about June 15, to make their future home. Misses Marie Kiev, Nellie Car roll, PhyllU Way and Leta. Smith, Sutherlin teachers, residing at Ho tel Sutherlin during the school term, left Saturday tor their homes in various directions, Miss Kiev going to Pol l laud, Miss Carroll, Eu gene, Miss Smith, Oakland, Ore., and Misa Way, Larimui'e, N. -Dakota. Sutherlin fs very fortunate in having Miss Kiev aud Mibs Carroll high school teachers, return next term. . A picnic dinner was given by the ladies of the P. T. A. in Community hall last Friday evening. Ice cream was donated by the P. T. A. and met with Mrs. J. P. Star Weduesuay basket. Old and young seemed to have a very enjoyable time. A short talk was given by our president, Mrs. E. G. Kingwell. C. W. Hartley was quite ill last week from an attack of gall stones. His many friends are glad to see him about as usual uguin.
