At the same time there Is no good reason why the homo builder who wants a small place should not have his money's worth In (rood plan, good construction, and fine appearance. Hero is a house, design 8-A-l, that is small In size, but biff In accommodations and other worth while properties. To a certain extent this house Is patterned on tho apartment house unit, but -there is Infinitely mora accommodation. There is light and air on all si don, & privacy and sr-n-e of possession that simply cannot be brought into apartment house quarters. This house Is not the poverty stricken thin littlo aek with which we have become all too familiar. It Is a complete house) with room of good sizo and all nortn of fittings and equipment to make It work able. Just for on example of the fine qualities of this house consider tho living room. This is nearly 211 feet wide and more than 15 fcot long.: In placo of the common-place nnd separately spaced double hung windows wo have hero a group of thrco windows within ono large opening. This not only conserves wall space, but makv'3 the room much more inviting. Tho windows nro of tho easement type, being particularly fitting to a small houso of this kind. Double hung windows could be substituted it they were preferred, btit casements are strongly recom mended. At tho end of tblrt room there is a nicely designed but Inexpensive fireplace, flanked on one side by a hookcaso and on the other by a French door thn opens off tho porch. At the other end of tho living room Is a beautiful side lighted door framo with a full glnsird door, and at the side of the door, In a most convenient place, 1ho coat closet. The kitchen also will reward study. First of all there Is a dining alcovo with built-in seats and table. There is space hero to seat six people. Tho outer wall Is given over completely to windows, a fine cheerful nook in which to have meals. There is plenty of cupboard space and work, table. Thoj-e-frlgerator Is equipped with nn outald icing door and thero is a grade entranco to the basement. This is a welt lighted, cheerful kitchen in which the housekeeper will tnko pleasure In working. As for tho remainder of the house, there 1 a ilnen closet in the hallway, bath room with recessed tub, and bedroom of good slzo with generous cross ven tilation nnd closet. Tho basement is fully excavated with heater and fuel room under the living room, laundry under the kitchen, vegetable and other stor age unnr th bedroom. Kvery owner Bhould be on the job, not when he sees the first frame work of his. home rising, but when iw sees the first shovel of dirt taken ' out. When one Is ready to excavate, a sewer trench should always be dug , to the street, so that if a sudden storm should flood the excavation, 1 it can be readily drained, otherwise there would be a mud hole to work in for several days. j While the actual excavating ia' going on, the top soil, or the loam, ; biiouid be placed to one side and 1 later, distributed over the low : parts of the lot so that a lawn can ; be quickly started. Excavators should always dig to the full depth, as shown by the plans, and the excavation shqjild be twelve inches wider all ( around : than the plans Indicate. Footings should always be 8 inches wider i than thp actual foundation, viz: if the foundation is to be 13 inches wide, footings should be -21 inches , wide, or an extension of 4 inches : on each side of the ' foundation. Footings should be six Inches deep and should be made of burned brick, laid in cement mortar, made from Portland cement and sharp sand, or in lieu of this type a con crete footing may bs poured with , equal success. Footings should . rest on solid firm earth or rock. If a brick or tile foundation is built on this footing ft should be : completely plastered with a ce- i ment mortar.
