CHAPTER XXI
When Ashtoreth came in, Mona
had slipped Into a crimson smok
ing jacket and was propped on her
elbow, rouging her lips.
She had a gold-backed mirror in
one thand, and l. the other a little
silver pot of ruby paste.
"Now Mona, you know the doc
tor said you shouldn't so much as
raise your arms!" scolded Ashto
reth. "Give me that stuff this min
ute." Mona dabbed unconcernedly with
her Ions forefinger.
"1 look ghastly," she explained.
"I put on my mouth. Then I go to
sleep."
Ashtoreth sat by the Bide of the
berth.
"Mona," she said, "I'm awfully
worried about you. The doctor says
you've had a little hemorrhage,
and he wants you to stay In bed
until your temperature goes down.
If It isn't normal by the time we
reach Guadaloupe, he says you
shouldn't try to go ashore. You'll
have to stay right In your berth
until wo get back to New York.
Then you're to have your lungs
X-raytd. I don't want to frighten
you, or anything like that, but
honestly, Mona you must be very
careful."
"It's so hot!" "'she complained,
and tossed the .phcet aside. '
Ashtoreth pulled up the covers.
"Be good, Mona," sho admon

Mona' reached for her hands as
she smoothed out the sheet.

Ashtoreth was trembling violent
ly. A horrible fear obsessed her.
As If Death had come on stealthy
feet across the shining sea. and
entered, unbidden, their little
cabin. She seemed to feel its pres
ence. ,
Mona lay on her back now.
There were bright spots on either
cheek, burning redly. And her
eyes were blazing blue. Her skin
was hot, and very dry. Presently
she dropped her lids, and remained!
so still that Ashtoreth thought she
slept.
Ashtsreth stood up then, and
went to the porthole. She saw the
moon on the water, making It so
magically lovely that there seemed
nothing real anywhere about. The

clam. And Ashtoroths spirit was

of the most unusual benefit per
formances In the history of Wash
ington theatre life was Riven last
night when the families of four
men now In Jail for gambling were
made the beneficiaries of a $5,000
fund rained at a down town bur-

soclaies.
. The four men In jail were ai
rested on June 6 after a raid on
a "black Jack" Rume. They re
fused to name their associates or
I to reveal anything of gambling
conditions in Washington.

The case was tried before Judge
Robert C. Morrow last June. The
jury was unable to agree and was
discharged without the district at
torney or defendant and his coun
sel being present. It was again set
for trial and the defendant Inter
posed a plea ot former Jeopardy.
It Is the first time the question
has been determined in Oregon.
The opinion holds that Chandler
was twice put in Jeopardy for the
same offense, in violation of the
constitution.
