PORTLAND, Jan. 2S. As the re

arrest today on charges ranging
from vanrancy to gambling and
possession of llQuor.
Thirty men were arrested Sun
day night at a pool hall. Charges
were preferred against only four
teen of the 3ft. however. Threw;
found playing pool for money, were
charged with gambling. Eleven
were charged with vagrancy.
Saturday night was the big
night. More than 125 men were tak
en to the police station questioned
by detectives, finger-printed and
their records compared with those
on file.

Upton Introduced a bill providing
for the organization of rural fire
protection districts outside of In
corporated cities and towns,, and
providing, for tbe levying, ot taxes
and issuance of bonds for the
maintenance of the districts. i
The measure gives connty courts
authority to establish the fire pro
tection districts on petitions from
the people, and If objections are
filed by 25 or more residents of
the proposed district representing
5i per cent or more of tbe auaspd
property valuation, tbe court is
authorised to- cH an election on
the rastlon.
The district would be governed
by a board of directors who, among
other things would elect a fire
chief.
