Florida is already pointing 'out that half a million more people live there now than in ' 1020; states like Michigan, which gained 900,000, and Cali- foraia. which (rained a full .... mi, t,i , vr 10c. iitcie 10 uiiu Dbnic umb lliuunuijr viil Jiiciiliuiill a Ulin- fied slloiice. No estimate was made for Nevada; that state if showed a decline in population between 1910 and 1920, and ;;the census bureau tentatively gives it its 1920 figure 77, ' 467. So Nevada probably won't say much about the bureau's figures. Yet, to our mind, thefee figures give the state an excellent talking point. Consider rthe situation for a mo--'. raent. Our national population has gone up 10,000,000 sines :,1920. .In this century we have seen the "open spaces" con v racting steadily, year by yeah ' Texas, once a synonym for a vast, thinly-populated area, now has Upwards of 5,000,000 -inhabitants. The rolling hills of Oklahoma ar.s filling up. ' ,in the mid-western industrial areas cities like Detroit,. To .: ledo, Indianapolis and Buffalo are Constantly extending their borders. Millions of men and women do ri6t khow -What It is to see ah unfenced field. But amid all this growth and '; expansion, Nevada rerrfains the Nevada of the past cen- ; tury. Its 110,000 square miles Of territory support fewer .people than live in a city like Cantom 0. ; It is larger than all the New" England states put together with a population less than one-sixth Of Rhode Island's' alone. It is, we might say, art oasis of emptiness in a land of crowdsi The time is , not far distant wheii the average American will come to ap .predate openness of this kind at its true worth. When that day comes Nevada Will be host every Bummer to hordes of .automobile tourists. This Will be good for NeVdda, and i; ' .will also be good for. the Heaven, is still one of those day Without seeing a house or 'It .'atill.riha tlin ninfvolr.no went. no itu 1a un ctutti' unu .newly-made; its rolling sage brush plains are framed by backgrounds of distant, hafce-wreathed mountains'. The md 'torist has nothing to do all day 16ng but Soak himself in free . 'dorm and beauty. So, we repeat, Nevada's boosters ought to begin quoting the census figures, A decline, in population '.would be a fatal blow to the pride of some states, but not to ;Netada.'. A good part of that state's magnificence is the : sparseness of its population, .: . Approval by the houBe roads committee of the Dowell bill ' to authorize appropriations totaling $165,000,000 to continue the present program of federal aid to states in highway construction arouses our hopes. It may mean that Congressman Hawley will be able to secure that condition ally promised $300,000 needed for the North Umpqua road ' fl?6m Roseburg to Diamond lake, As chairman of the house Ways and means committee, through whose hands all appro priation bills must pass, Mr, Hawley is in a, stronger position than ever to do something for his expectant constituency. In view of the money to be made ovaitable by the McDowell bill, we shall await with confidence a favorable outcome of Mr. Hnwley'a efforts to secure deserving aid for the Dia mond lake route, Cotint that week as a blank which does not record ox- pert advice on opportunities in Douglas county. Since tho : -beginning of the year visiting specialists have told us about our "wonderful opportunities" And "unexcelled advantages" i hyith regard to sheep, wool, poultry, cattle, landscape) garden-' ing, berries, orchard fruits, manufacturing industries, tour i ist attractions, garden truck and oilier items not now iu our I memory. The latest on the list is corn, a specialist pointing '. out how well the county is adapted to increased acreages of ; it, and how nicely it would serve ns a poultry ond hog fat- tone!1. If the county could capitalize on about one per cent of nil this export information it would soon take on the np- poarance of a colony of millionaire land and manufacturing t barons. ; 'T, Fortunately no "Itoosegbw" incarceration awaits those '. ox -service men who fail to respond to the call for duty at ! the airport next Sunday. The fishing season on tho upper (North Umpqua river opens the same day, and wo four the veterans who are votaries of the sport with rod and line will be conspicuously absent from the volunteer pick-and-shovol brigade. There is nothing, however, to prevent the absen tees from hiring substitutes to do their share of the mnntml labor. This is intended solely for information, but we haw lio objection to its acceptance as advice. ' ,,, ' o i ., ' Tho Jenkins bill, providing for the admission of rela tives of Immigrants to tho United States, outside the quota provisions, has been favorably reported in the House of l.e . prcsenlntives, and may. become h law shortly. Let's hope It will. Not more than 4,000 people will enter the country under this law hardly enough to amount to any relaxation in our exclusion policy; and many hardships and hoartaches will bo prevented. The bill deserves support. ' "' 1 rj Register now, Citizens! It Is only tho men and women who vote than call be considered good citizens. . CHILD HEALTH DAY WILL BE OBSERVED THRUOUT COUNTY In 1624 the American Child Health Association, a national child welfare association, set May Day aside as tho National Child Health Dny. It has caught the Imagination of the nation and has become fnnllllar to eVefybne who has the interest of children at heart. The slogan, "Bettor Child ren for Our Nation: a Hotter Na tion for Our Children" . has been adopted. May Day Fetes have now be come Health Fetes throughout the country. Thero Is no motive power like linppincns and more happiness Is needed in health education, through play, sport and adventure; through an environment that en rlchPB with music, beauty, color, heroism, the lovo of nature, Ood nnd mankind. For that reason the Nlitlonal Health Day has becomo a celebrntlon as intensely beautiful nnd glot'.dus ns tho noted May-polo dance..
