CORN TESTS MADE TO DETERMINE KIND BEST FOR LOCAL USE With tho Idea of determining tho best varieties of corn for Douglas county, a series of tests have, been conducted - by the countv ngent during the past year. Three of these tests have been In the Yon- ealln section on the farms of C. R. Hear, J. IT. Kruse and J. B. Wilson. Recent checking of the results In the Dear and Kruse farms, nt which 13. N. Rressmnn, farm crops specialist from the Oregon experi ment station, wns present, brought out the fact that some of the corns which have been grown locally In the county are among the best for this section. Golden Glow nnd n Pink variety locally known as- the Wilson corn gave the highest yields of dry corn, aud matured suffi ciently early to -bo ahead of earliest frost In nn nvorage year. Minnesota No. 11 matured well on both farms but did not yield as heavily as the two first mentioned varieties, McKay Yellow Dent pro duces the largest yields of sllago, hut Is somewhat later In maturing for dry corn than some of the other varieties. In tho tests to determine the best variety for silage on the J. H. Wil son fnrm. the McKay Yellow Dent gavo tho hlghost yield, followed by Coos will to Dent. Gold on Glow and Minnesota No. 1.1. Although one or the most Im portant corn growing counties of the Northwest, statistics show n rather large annual Importation of eastern corn Into Douglas county. This corn. Is used largely In the feeding and fattening of turkeys. However, much money could ho kept nt home If the acreage of corn were Increased to nn extent to meet local needs.' That corn Is well suited to Dcug- lns County Is nttested by tho fact that the first prize for the best corn at the recent State Fair nt Salem, was given to O. C. Brown of Dixouville. Com does well on the stronger soils of tho county such as tho black mud and the river bottom lands, -it In not so well suited to the upland area 3 In their, present state of fertility. r This Car has been carefully checked and recon ditioned where necessary V Motor S v Radiator 1 vRear Axle 1 V Transmission 1 v Starting 1 V Lighting 9 V Ignition g V Battery vTires v Upholstery vTop v Fenders v Finish A Liberal Plan For the Purchase of Depend able Used Cars You can buy an O, K.'d recondi tioned car from us, on" the Gen eral Motors Payment Plan on remarkably easy terms. . America is drunk with power tottering with wealth nnd insane with an orgy of self-expression," George Chester Wise, professor of modern languages at Parsons Col lege, Fairfield, Iowa, declared to day nt the international purity con ference. Tho lawlessness, unbelief, vice, crime, divorce, unnatural affection, degeneration and anarchy in the country taday proves tho asser tion, he said. In order to guide youth's way over tho roads of life, in an effort to avoid such tremendous pitfalls, Professor Wise suggested that old men and grey haired women be called upon to formulate laws of life. Charles Sherman Rodwell, Bos ton, general secretary of the New England Watch and Ward Society, declared that the reformers were "not necessarily natural born trou ble makers or disturbers of the peace." Hostility to vice, ho said, has naturally arisen in tho minds of ninny people ns a result of cal amities occuring In their families so that warfare against vice amounts to a justifiable family feud. Creation of a new department In the national government to deal entirely with problems of the homo was suggested by Dr. Emma F. A. Drake, Portlnnd, Oregon. The conference voted to solicit 130.000 for the purpose of financ ing n world purity congress to be held in 1929. ROSEBURG UNDERTAKING CO. Established 1901 ' M. E.
