Other offenders In the list of man-caused forest fires are: Rail- roads. 83: brush burning, 31; and lumbering. 22; the . remaining ' 59 fires were due to miscellaneous human agencies. . , , In addition 'to' the 800 man-caused forest fires, there were 690 lightning fires, mailing a total for the national forest regions of Ore gon and Washington of 1490 forest fires. These fires caused an esti mated damage of $638,351, burned over 241.432 acres of hind and cost $500,070 to suppress. ( i Of the smokers tires, 204 were on the national forests of Oregon and 77 were on the national for ests of Washington. "We appreciate the interest and cooper ation- of many of the forest using public in keeping down the forest fire hazard, but so long as we have, such a high percentage of. smokers-' and campers' tires', it will bo necessary to close portions ot the national forests during periods of high fire danger, as was done last summer.
