SMALL HOUSE AT
COTTAGE GROVE
HALTS FIGHT CARD
Evidently Cottage Grove boxing
fans have been too grently occupied
with ChriBtmus shopping to be in
terested in a boxing card for only
28 people, of whom about one-half
were from Roseburg, gathered for
the card scheduled for last night.
As a result of the small house the
mutches were called off and no
fights held. Pat I'adelford of this
city, was to havo met Harry Harris
of Portland in the headllner.
Wo can still fill your order for

(the senior hlKh school gym. The
Uivei'ton team is on a holiday
'barnstorming' trip which will carry
them over the greater part of the
'state. The team is one of the strong
lones of Coos county and should
'give the Roseburg boys a hard
Ibattle.
I The local, team Is practically an
unknown quantity. The maierlal
, is largely Inexperienced and in
'practice has not shown up in a
! manner satisfactory to the coach.
I The only game played this year
has been with Drain high school.
Wednesday night the team tan
gles with the alumni in what prom
ises to be a hard fought game, as
the alumni team will be composed
of experienced players and it is
understood that there will be a
large enough squad to substitute
frequently so that the high school
team will be forced to face a very
strong aggregation.

The fire department was called
out this morning for n stubborn
basement fire nt the C. A. Lock
wood home in Laurelwood. A
spark from the furnace apparent
ly caught in a pile -of rubbish in
the basement and smoldered for
considerable time before- the fire
was discovered. The- fire depart
ment was greatly- handicapped by
the volume of smoke which had to
be cleared away before the flames
could be reached. Although hose
was laid and mad: available in
case of necessity, only chemicals
were used in fighting the fire. Mr.,
Lockwood highly praised the de
partment, following the. '.fire for
the efficient manner In which they
handled the situation, and partlcu-j
laiiy for their care In avoiding any,
more damage than was absolutely,
necessary in order to get to the
flames which were in a difficult'
place to reach. The loss will prob-.!
ably amount to over $1,000, which;
is covered by insurance.
