IETJUD First Game of Southern Oregon Basketball Con ference Expected to Be a Fast One. The Roseburg high school basket ball team will play Its first con ference game In this city on Fri day evening, meeting the Ashland basket tossers. This Is the opening game of the southern Oregon con tests for the district championship ami as Ashland and Roseburg are I old rivals, and both always have good teams, an Interesting game Is anticipated. The Roseburg team has made a far better showing so far than had been anticipated by the fans of the city. The local high school Is In a slump period wso far as athletics are concerned. Such periods often occur In school life and must be reckoned with. For some unknown reason the school's athletes are all small In alnture and light In weight. Natur ally they fare a great handicap In meeting teama where larger bovs are Included. In football during the past season tne high school jnjf. fered many defeats, although the team demonstrated a fundamental knowledge of the game In ntany respecta superiority to many of their victorious opponents. Lack of weight, and Inexperience, however, gave the school a very poor sea son. t Prospects at the outset of the I basket bull season were very dls to 10:00 ; couraglng. Jan 91 A state law that would close road bouses at midnight, a sandarri nf salaries making them the same In counties of like population, and acceptance by county commis sions of state .compensation for peace officera were urged In re. solution by the etate Sheriff's as sociation today. The resolutions were nnnoert Just prior to the opening of the Joint session of the sheriffs with the district-attorneys' association and the Association of County Judges and commissioners. The sheriffs also cassed, reso lution of sympathy to the fam ilies of E. P. Ellington, sheriff of Coos county, who was killed In wreck, and S. N. Warfield. sheriff of Benton countv. who died of heart disease Just follow- dance halls. The County Judges' and Com missioners' association late yes terday ravored legislation that would require auto owners to pay an additional tax of 1 cent a gallon gasoline for county road psrposes. It waa pointed out that present state gasoline tax of three cents a gallon reverts to the state and that the counties, as such, receive no direct benefit. Following an extended discus sion, the association passed a mo tion to refer the question to the committee on roads for recom mendation. . C. P. Barnard, countv ludge of Lane county, started the discus sion, when he reviewed the cir cumstances of Increasing wear and tear on county roads as a re sult of steadily growing auto traf fic, particularly freight cars and passenger busses. The association also adopted unanimously a resolution favor ing congressional reimbursement of Oregon-California land grant counties for taxes lost during the last ten years because of grant land withdrawals.
