Many young people conceive the ;;;idea that in order to obtain any reputation or social position, ;;;;they have to conform to the manners of the popular crowd in their home town, college, school, etc. Even if they think a i; certain practice is undesirable or vicious, they feel they must ;:;conform to it, or they will be regarded as peculiar, and will ;;; be more or less ostracized. This is an entirely wrong no ; tion, and people w ho expect to amount to much should get over it at the earliest possible moment They will find that "'few are turned down for such reasons by any group of peo j;;;ple who amount to anything. They will find that those who have strength and independence of character are secretly ;;:aiimired, and they attract friends by giving an example of ;a forceful personality. -There is of course such a thing as j- carrying non-conformity, to extremes where people seem merely eccentric. But one does not nave to do that. A rea "sonable person can decline to partake in a lot of the popular "habits which Beem to him unsuitable, without giving an im ;!press'ion of being a crank. He does not have to read his I!!! friends any lectures as to their conduct. But if he takes his :J:; position firmly that he does not care to do certain things ;';that seem undesirable, he gives an impression of being a per- son of decision and initiative who has ideas of his own. He "may temporarily be ridiculed a little in a good natured way. But in the end his course has attracted favorable attention, "and has marked him as a person out of the ordinary run of ;; mediocrity, who is likely to do well in the world.
