SIXTEEN NEGROES
LYNCHED IN U. S.
DURING PAST YEAR
There were 16 persons lynched
during 1926, according to figures
compiled by the Tuskegee lnetl
tute.
This number, ranking with the
number 16 for 1924 as the smal
lest number of persons lynched in
' any year since records of lynch
In gs have been kept, is 17 less
than the number 33 for 1923, and
. 41 less than the. number 67 for
" 1922. Two of the victims were
insane. Three others had been
, formally released by the courts.
Ten of the persons lynched were
taken from the hands of the law,
2 from jails and S from officers
of the law outside of Jails. Two
of those lynched were burned at
the stake and one was put to
death and body burned.
There were 39 instances In
which officers of the law prevent
ed lynchlngs. 7 of these were in
northern states and 32 in Southern
state. In 26 of the cases the pri
soners were removed or the
guards augmented or other pre
cautions taken. In 13 other In
stances, armed force was used to
repel the would be lynchers. In
3 instances during the year per
sons charged with being connected
with lynching mobs were indict
ed. Of the 41 persons thus be
fore the courts, 21 were sentenc-
. ed; 5 suspc-ded sentences, de
pendent on good behavior, of from
. 4 to 12 months on the road; 1
for 30 days in jail; and 16 of from
6 months on the road to 8 years
In the penitentiary.
Of the sixteen persons lynched
all were Negroes. 6 or less than
onehalf of those put to death
were charged with rape or at
tempted rape. The offenses
charged were: Murdor, 6; rape,
4; attempted rape, 2; killing of-
'' firer of the law, 2; attacking
i child, 1; Insulting women, 1.

PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 31.
The Northwestern Electric com
pany has taken over the electric
companies' properties that serve
the cities of Bainier, Kalama and
Woodland, these properties having
been owned until Wednesday by
the Inland Power and Light com
pany and the Puget Sound Power
and Light company.
At the same time the above deal
was made the Vancouver -Water
Works was taken over by the Port
land Electric Power company.
The amount Involved in the
transfers was about $1,700,000.
By these deals, the Stone and
Webster Interests, which controlled
the selling companies named, retire
from the utility field In southwest-1
era Washington.
A new company will be formed,
it is said, to operate the light and
power company serving Hlllsboro.
