THURSDAY, DEC. 81, 1926. ALL IN THE GAME. One phrase rather prevalent now is, "It's all in- the game." Perhaps the different temper of the times is indi cated by the use of this expression, instead of "It's all in the day's work," whin one used to hear frequently. "It's all in the game" seems to suggest a rather light hearted point of view, that refuses to get deeply stirred by either success or misfortune, but just goes along cheerfully and hopefully. There is such a thing as a flippancy that refuses to be seri ous about anything. People with that point of view flit from one activity to something else, and they never settle down into one determined purpose, so they do hot accomplish co-very muchr-ATid yet there is such a thing as being so in tensely serious that one sees things out of their true propor tion. Many folks will be so discouraged by a few failures, that the future will seem hopeless to them, and they will set tle down to things they can do easily and never get any where. The "all in the game" point of view suggests a per sonality that can take defeat without whimpering, and just pick oneself up and go on with tho hope of better luck next time. If that point of view is accompanied by a resolute per severance, and an untiring determination to get somewhere and amount to something in this world, it should be a very j useful attitude. When the person of that type is knocked down, he does not complain and say he never has any luck end that it is no use trying. Nor does he attribute the blame to someone else. He tries to think where he made a misjilay in the game of daily effort, and how the next time he can avoid that mistake. We need lightness of heart as well as seriousness of purpose in this world. CLKAN HANDS AH around me men are storming, saying other men are mean ; all the atmosphere they're warming, springing language red and green; and the gents who go reforming should be sure their hands are clean. To our village came a talker and ho gave us quite a roast; every custom was a shocker, and our vices were a host; he was A determined mocker of the things of which we boast. Ife administered a flaying to one man who said, "Great Scott! All the things this bird is saying may be true, I wist and wot, ljut I wonder, while he's neighing, if his record bas no spot. I will see what he's been doing in the dead and buried past, all his ran cid deeds pursuing I will travel pretty fast, and I doubt not I'll be viewing things to make us stand aghast." So he left us for a season, then came back with heaving breast, and he showed us ample reason that reformer to detest, for he'd pulled off arson, treason, mayhem in the middle west. Now we look on moral strangers with a stern, forbidding gaze, and we warn them of the dangers that their uplift talks may raise; we have shotguns in our mangers to discourage all such jays. Thus the false and blemished faker does great damage to a cause; he's the shatterer, the breaker, of men's faith in moral laws; and the busy precept maker should ap pear with snowy paws. This Is a sanltury measure recom mended by the Oregon experiment Station to get rid of in lection sources for brown rot, and blos som bllgnt fungi. This does not take the place of spring or sum mer spray, but aids in control of these diseases. It is economically unwise to put fertilizer on Oregon soils that are deficient in lime. "Sluggish" sour soils do not make the best use of applied fertilizer, says the experiment station. , Lime also Improves the tilth" of heavy soli. The best looking Oregon potato tubers may carry the most serious types ot infectious diseases with out detection from external or in ternal appearance. Some of these troubles noted by the experiment station are mild mossaic, rugose mosaic, leaf roll, witches broom, and occasionally vertlciillum wilt. In order to keep from carrying these diseases from one sessun to the next, It is essentlul that the grower know from what kind oi hills the seed potatoes come. The seed plot method Is the method recommended by the Oregon Ex periment station as the best lor insuring healthy seed potatoes. Nothing Is more Important In Oregon crop production than to be ready when planting time comes. One of the best times to v hill pasture seed, legumes especially. Is in January when the ground freezes sharply and thaws the following day. It is best to have the seed on hund and tested two weeks before pluming, the O. A. C. Experiment stutlon says. Broc coli, unknown here a few years ago, is now moving out of the state by hundreds of carloads. Kngilth walnuts, a curiosity in Oregon, but little more than a de cade ago, are now reaching up toward the million-dollar produc tion mark, and celery, which was imported by the carload a few years ago, is now shipped from Oregon by the tralnload. About twenty years ago we were obliged to import about 300 carloads of butter and egga per year. Now we are shipping double that amount all over tbe world. These products of course do not pile up wealth aa rapidly aa it cornea from our great staples like lumber, grain, fruit, salmon and livestock, but they all figure most prominently in tbe totals and each year sees some sddition to the lint of diversified products which can be grown here as well I ubc.ected of the newcomers is mint, which in money yield per acre overtops any of the other new j,roducis.
