OAKLAND STORE BakerJTanary Bkfg. groups ot singers to go about the streets at night dating the cnrist mas holiday season, singing such old favorite carols as "Blest be the Tie that Binds,' and -God rest ye Merry Gentlemen'." "There has been a pronounced awakening of interest in carols over the country. At last Christmas time, groups were organized here In Eugene to go about the streets singing carols." . Mr. Selfert then told of an ex perience he bad in Philadelphia some years ago. An effort was made to find out whether theatre audiences were familiar wltti the old (carols. Mr. Selfert had charge Lo( this work. In some of the largest theatres In the city, and the result ot the Investigation showed a sur prising number who knew the old carols. "There are many good carols that have recently been composed. Some of the most prominent com posers are Dudley Buck, Henry Hadley, and C. Whitney Cooms. But the old carols are being sung too. in tact, tney prooaDiy are sung more. They have endured for a long time, while those writ ten now are generally aung for a season or two and then forgotten; though some are probably great enough to be of permanent value. "The carat la primarily a folk song. All the old carols sprang from the heart. But generally the original tunes have been perfected, and given a definite form, and set down by some composer. That Is to say, the carols are often folk tunes modified by art. Carols come Into being among white peo ple much as the spirituals did among negroes. "The increase of Interest In carols Is due partly at least to the Increased Interest In religious mat ters today. On the other hand, I think the singing of carols has helped to awaken interest In re ligion, too. Many people get more spiritual Inspiration from muaio than from sermons. I can hear cood sermon and so awav Inspired. but I can receive much greater spiritual inspiration from hearing good religious singing. If the sing er's heart Is even partly in the song." "You say that carols ara primari ly folk music. I have heard It said that Jaxs is the folk music of America," Mr. Selfert was asked. He took Issue at once. "Don't you think so for a min ute," he said earnestly, "there Is little about Jan to warrant such an assumption. I believe rather that the real American folk music is found In the works ot such com posers as Stephen O. Foster, who wrote 'Home, Sweet Home,' and many other old favorites. By the way, a Mr. Howard junugan has recently discovered a large body of musical works by a hitherto unknown American composer or consiueraote merit, atong wim tne Una of folk music This may show that we Americans have not been so deficient in music as has al ways been supposed. There is something fascinating about Jazi, all right, but it la not yet of perma nent value In the musical world." WOMAN WELL KNOWN r ' HERE IS DEAD POUT LAND.
