THE AUTOCRAT. . .
The famous critic, Gilbert Gudgeon,' he seldom says ft
fjgasant word, he swats poor authors with his bludgeon, and
Says their efforts tire absurd ; poor writing stirs him up to
dudgeon whose f ulminations oft are -heard. He has a gift
f of red hot phrases, his adjectives leave trails of smoke, and
fie' shows insolence that dazes mild-mannered, gentle-hearted
folk : and now he ranks among the crazes we read him,
gKrgling till we choke. We like to hear the critic's bellows if
' we are safe from his attacks; we like to see the pther fellows
go limping home with beaten1 backs,' and nothing softens,
nothing mellows this Gilbert Gudgeon's mighty whacks. We
marvel much and we admire him, as he denounces mutt and
rkate,'ana hope that naught will ever tire him, that nothing
may his zeal abate; may 'wrath unmeasured ever fire him,
anointed messenger of fate; We're Always, glad to see the
others compelled to sip envenomed juice; we have small sym
pathy for ''brothers whom' some one' rises to traduce; we
laugh when some poor author smothers in Gilbert's flow of
tank' abase. And then some day we dpe the. paper, to see
trhom Gilbert deigns to swat; he says our brain's a tallow
apet,nd ai Iwe write is seedy rot; oh, then, behold us sweat
Mid, cdpqr, and swear that Gudgeon should M shot!
