It was on one set of tiro. Tbe same spirit, of restlessness, a desire for ibe strange and unconventional, urged him to scoff at trains on his trip to Columbus. He rode a mo torcycle all the way with his faith ful dog, "Olppy," nnd a rifle aa hi only companions. It took him thir-ty-tour aays, and be said, "it it hadn't rained so much I'd have I made it in two weeks." Holcomb Is 68, but bis ruddy face doesn't show It. Perhaps one, reason is. that be leads a life of nertect ' Deace and contentment How would you like to get up in the morning when tbe sun is just j climbing over the mountains and I bathing your little borne with its warm rays? And bow would you like, in this scene of perfect wood land beauty, lo make your break last while deer frisk In your front yard? Every day that la Holcomb a pleasure. The deer are his friends. He protects them. When be went to Oregon twenty-seven years ago he didn't find only deer. There were bears, coyotes and cpogara. Many friends in Columbus have re ceived gift hides of many animals. "I aspect to stay In Oregon," aays Holcomb. ' "For fifteen yeara I've been a U. S. forest ranger. I like the mountains. It's always warm on the west side of tbe Cascades ; where I live. On the east side it s i cold. Flowers ' bloom all year. ! That'a why they call it Roseburg." i Holcomb is going back next week, I but he Isn't going to ride a motor- cycle.
