Marine Corps; District of Portland arriv ed this morning at 9:ou a. m. and is making an inspection of the lo cal recruiting station in the Post Office building. Conditions at the local office was found very satisfactory, and the Captain was very pleased with results obtained. It is expected that recruiting will close la the near future as the quotas assign ed are being exceeded. Captain Larkin 1b leaving for Portland this evening. o Funkln Center Is close to Dixon-vllle. Mr. and Mrs. G. V. Range, of Dayton, Washington, were over night visitors here, leaving this morning for California points to winter. Eight Amerl can passengers were on board the international train which left for Tientsin with a detachment of American Infantry as a special guard. The train reached Yangt sun this morning. Four miles to the south General LlchingLlng's troops fired on It. The official re port alleges that the Chinese fear ed an enemy ruse in the use of foreign flags to cover the approach of General Feng Yu-Hslang's arm ored train. The train returned to Yangtsun, where some of the pass engers tramped several miles and secured motor cars in wnicn to proceed to Tientsin. i TIENTSIN, China, Dec. 11. The forces of General I.i Ching-Llng, civil governor of Chlhll province, defeated an advance column ot the Kuonilnchun army (follower of General Feng YuHsiang) near Munchang yesterday In an all day battle. The railways near this city have been cut and Peking-Tientsin mo tor road destroyed In several places. Machang Is to the south west ot Tientsin, in the area where Li- Ching-Ling troops are in contact with forces advancing against him from Honan. The main scene of fighting in the Tientsin sector has been to the north and northwest in the vicin ity of Yangtsun. Advices reaching the Jananese foreign ottice late last night and forwarded in a dis patch from Tokyo, said L.1 had But tered a "severe defeat."
