Hundreds of beautiful women, highly trained In the social traces, arts of the toil ette, dancing, music and religion, who have been freed from harems, now have the Turkish government seeking husbands for them. Most of them are wholly unfitted for the practical work of life. Abandonment of the harem also placed on the hands of the gov ernment many eunuchs, but their disposition has not been so diffi cult In the absence of regular em ployment in the cities, they have been sect to the provincial dis tricts for work on the farms. When President Mustapha Rent al assumed power in Angora, one of his first official acts was to banish the harems and slave house holds of Sultan Mohammed VI. the princes and members of the Royal Court In order to set an example, most of the Nationalist government of ficials have one, or at most only two wives. Indeed Mustapha Kern al Pasha has no wife st all, having ecently been granted a divorce. Economic conditions also serve to make It almost impossible for one to Indulge In the old luxury of plurality of wives. Prior to the present Social rev olution In Turkey, every woman was obliged to veil herself from all except her father, brother and hus band. If a man either Turk or for eigner, entered the sacred precincts or the harem, he usually paid with his life, while the master also had the right to kill his unfaithful wife or concubine. Only three foreigners, an Ameri can, a Ttritisher and a Frenchman, are known to have entered a real harem when It was occupied, and tney were disguised as Turks and spoke the Turkish language. By posing as government representa tives, they escaped the usual pen alty. "Any departure from the rules of conduct in the harems was severe ly punished by the eunuchs, who maintained security of the places and who were euphemistically call ed "Masters of the Maidens." or "Chiefs of the Abodes of Felicity." wnne riuitan Mohammed VI had only four legal wives, he had at his disposal several hundred "Ikhals." or favorites. WARTIME MATERIAL REBUILT BV AIR MAIL PLANE FACTORY CHICAGO, Dec. !. In a little' over 25 months of operation, the government airplane factory of the airmail service at Maywood has de-: vcloped Into a steadily going con-' cern with an output of 60 planes a ' yesr. ! Almost all of the material used tn the factory Is wartime surplus, 1 but It Is so rebuilt that an almost 1 new plane results. The planes are new, as far as the fuselage and wing surface Is concerned, but the wing frames and the engines come from the huge stores of wartime surplus. 1 1 shops rather closely to the 1)11 war- j tune design, but a few modiflca-j tlons have been developed, chiefly j in the fuselage. The greatest changes have been effected In the engine, without however, any material difference In j the design of the 400-horsepower Liberty motor. The plan receives' these from storage, stamped with the names of a tloxen different; I manufacturers and rebuilds thctu completely. New bearings, pistons and gears throughout, carefully fitted by band Improve the reliability of the en gine tremendously.
