SINKING FUND WILL MEET GENERAL APPROVAL. , -The decision of theity council to establish a sinking fund next year with which to retire $27,000 worth of city bonds is an act of good business policy that cannot fail to meet with the approval of tha taxpayers generally. Under ithe plan proposed an annual eyy sufficient to raise $3,000 land starting in 1926 with one mill it will require nine ; years to raise the desired amount. That periooj will meet ;the date of maturity of $12,000 of the bonds, issued for the : purchase of the city library premises, and at the same time precede by a few years the remaining $15,000 worth, issued :to pay for new fire fighting apparatus. Interest on both ; issues will be taken care of during the amortization period Tout of the general fund of the city. Liquidation of the $15, '000 block prior to maturity, under the option of so doing five .years after the date of flotation, will save a few thousand I dollars interest. ; I, Two years before the retirement of the $27,000 worth .of bonds referred to above, the city will be able to pay-off also in full the $25,000 batch of city hall bonds, thanks to a linking fund started for that particular purpose during; the i mortgage covera it! administration of Mayor K. Tuo situation Is very similar to that which exists In connection wth branch banking, where we have well-intentioned gentlemen operating large chains of branch banks and at the same time vot ing resolutions against branch baoklng or advocating tbe adop tion of bills opposed to branch banking, but with loopholes which allow their particular kind ' of branch banking to continue California for example. Why can we not get rid of the righteous Indignation on these types of discussion and get down to basic facts? The women of the future, so far as physically able, will be helping their husbands support their families, according to the prediction of Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, made in a recent address at Milwaukee. She felt that the standards of expense and the level of prices will continue to rise, making it necessary for the women to take hold and help their hus bands. The women of 20 years ago would have groaned at such a prospect. Not merely were most of them unable to do anything" to help support their families, but a very great number required help to do their housework. Trobably the housework of the ordinary home is not more than half of what it was 25 years ago, owing to new inventions and cus toms. The modern woman is full of energy, and if she can get more of the benefits of the world by taking on some ac tivities outside the home, she will not hesitate to do so. o The county farm conference to be held in this city, starting tomorrow, is of vast importance to the agric iK unl interests of tin's county.
