own heavy burden. Our people have always been believers
in peace, and have been foremost in advocating peace mea
sures. We shall of course want to join in with any move for
" disarmament which may be initiated by the rest of the world.
The feeling will be expressed by some that treaties have
been made before and broken. Yet it does seem true that
'thfe people of those countries are thoroughly sick and dis-
gusted with war. They want no more of it. They are will
ing to go to great lengths to get peace. If that is the case,
any big war for the next generation is very unlikely. The

Governor Friend W. Richardson
Indicated ln a letter made public
today that at present he would not
pardon Miss Charlotte A. Whit
ney, social service worker, whose
conviction of violating the commer
cial syndicalism law has Just been
upheld by tlio United States su
preme court. The letter was writ
ten to Upton Sinclair, the author,
who had requested executive
clemency ln behalf of Miss Whit
ney. The governor asserted that he
would uphold the syndicalism law
as Impartially ss other laws. Miss
Whitney was found guilty and sen
tenced to the penitentiary for mem
bership in the communist party.
Since the supreme court declined
to interfere, many petitions for
pardon have been presented by or
ganizations and Individuals.
