Events belong to unusual days. But day after day
you get out of bed, wear clothes, eat foods, walk in shoes.
News of better mattresses for your bed, of better clothes,
food, shoes, at prices you like ... is of more moment
to you than the overthrow of kings. Things of daily im
portance are talked about in advertisements. Shaving
sticks, tooth pastes, cuff links, breakfast foods. Here is
friendly, intimate news to make your days more pleasant.
News of things you know about and might like to know
more. Conveniences you once thought could never be
yours.
Advertisements are the news of every-day things'

PARIS, Oct. 30. It In learned on
nigh authority that Senator Victor
Henry ilerenger will be appointed
shortly to aucceed Emlle llaesch-
ner aa French ambassador to the
United Btutes.
The decision of the government
to change ambassadors in Wash
ington la closely related to the
American debt funding negotia
tions.
Foreign Minister Brland has Im
pressed upon Premier Painleve and
others of his colleagues in the cab
inet that another effort should be
made to settle the debt.
Senator Berenger Is regarded as
the best man available to bring
this about. His financial authority
In France, his Intimate acquain
tance with the subject and the
Ideas he derived from his recent
experiences in Washington aa a
member ot the Caillaux debt mis
sion have persuaded the govern
ment that. If something more Is to
be done he is the man to do it
There Is a- disposition in some
quarters to criticise Ambassador
Daeachner for his dispatches to the
foreign office prior to the depar
ture or the French mission for the
United States, it being declared
that these aUvlces left M Caillaux
and his party under misapprehen
sion as to the attitude of the
American debt fundus commis
sion.
Tha usual inquiry whether M.
Berenger Is persona grata to the
American government as ambassa
dor has not yet been made, but is
expected to follow In due course.
Senator Berenger, seen by the
newspapermen as be was about to
leave town for the week end, aald
he had not the slightest knowledge
of his prospective appointment..
Failed In Frtnch Eyes.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 30. News
of an impending change In French
ambassadors to Washington was
received here with apparent surprise.
j So far as disclosed, M. Daesch
; ner's contacts with the American
i government have all been of agree
i able character, and he has made
! many friends In American official
j life.
I There Is no doubt, however, that
I In one respect the mission to the
t United Slates has fulled. It waa
; generally understood when he suc
1 ceeded Jules Jusserand that his
I major duty would be to pave the
I way for a aettlement of the French
war di'bt and to that end he had
ntnny conferences with American
j officials. It was apparent too. that
when the French debt commission,!
j headed by Joseph Caillaux reached1
I Washington, It believed itself to
have been fully Informed through
, the French embassy here of the
American attitude, but found later
that It had indulged in over-confidence
as to a settlement on accept
able terms. To what extent the
ambassador has been held respon
slhle for this situation and for the
fuiliire of the Washington funding
negotiations remains to be disclos
ed. It Is a subject on which neither
the enilmssy nor the state depart
ment will comment.

"Why such stress on cleanness in gasoline"? A fair, question. The answer
you'll find interesting.
You can readily understand why a physically clean gasoline makes the better
motor-fuel Certainly and Associated is purified by special processes, one
of which is well-defined, complete filtration.
Another kind of cleanness is expressed in terms of chemistry and has to do
with "boiling points. "Associated Gasoline is distilled by a method which gives
to this dean motor fuel, the correct "chain" or range of boiling points. They

That is why each charge ignites instantly and " burns" or explodes completely

t State Press Comment $
What's la A Name? - ;
Change the name of Salem to
Chemeketa. That la what The
Capital Journal of that city Is sug
gesting and urging on grounds
that Salem la a commonplace
name and of no significance
whareaa Chemeketa ta the ancient
Indian name tor the aboriginal
village which stood oa the pre
sent site of Oregon's capital for
centuries unnumbered.
I'ndoubtedly any attempt to re
chrlstea Salem would be met with
a (real deal ot opposition and,
plenty of reasonable objections,
yet the fact remains that the con
tention upon which The Capital
Journal bases Its plea la sound.
There, are 28 Salema in as many
states of the union. The name
of Oregon's capital la a borrowed
one and has no historical or des
criptive significance whatever.
Oregon would have the only Che
meketa in the world .and the game
would link Oregon's canital citv
with Its own primitive beginnings.
ine suggestion of the 8alem
paper calls attention again to the
singular barrenness of Oregon
nomenclature, a barrenness which
is quite in contrast to the rich
ness of the nomenclature of our
neighboring atate to the north.
rew of the cities of Oregon bear
namea or any. Individuality or of
any particular significance.
Portland and Albany are fur.
titer examplea of namea borrowed
from other ciUes. Astoria is one
of the few exceptions to the gen
eral rule. Though there Is an
Astoria on Long Island, it ia As
toria, orgon, that la known and
the very mention of the name re
calls the birth of western civiliza
tion in which this city played
such a historic part.
Eugene is not a common name
for a city and It baa the further
virtue of being named for Eu
gene Skinner, one ot the earliest
of white settlers on the upper Wil
lamette, The Dalles la both dis
tinctive and descriptive. Corval
11s, meaning the heart of the val
ley, has merit aa a name, but let
it be remembered that thla not
the original name of the college
town and supports the contention
of the Salem paper that there are
plenty of precedents for the move
It urges.
Pendleton waa named to honor
an Ohio congressman who never
saw Oregon and where ia there
It be remembered that this is not
as Baker, Ashland, Marshfield,
Koseburg, Bend?
Klamath Kalis alone of the
sisterhood ot principal citiea ot
Oregon, bears an Indian name
which la linked with the early his
tory ot the community. To the
contrary note the character and
flavor of early Indian names
Seattle. Tacoma. Spokane, Yaki
ma, Walla Walla, Chehalla, We
natchee, Toppenlsh all names
reminiscent or .the early anteced
ents ot these placea and namea
which belong solely to Washing
ton. It may be too late for Oregon
to correct early mistakes In christ
ening her principal trading marta
with unimaginative and prosaic
namea, but, aa the Salem paper
points out much older cities have
had their name changed. Wit
any Individuality to such names
